Thanked: 2Hello from Tampa
Hello all, I have been a DE shaver for close to 6 years and a while ago my wife gave me a straight razor. She told me it was her father's. She is from the Czech Republic and her family is there. On one side of the razor it is marked Soligen and the other side is 44 CHR SAUTTER DORTMUND. It is tiny, only 3/8" wide, it is a little scuffed up so I would send it out to be honed before I think about using it. So the seed has been planted, unknowingly, by my wife. So do I use this razor or buy something else like a Dovo or a Boker?

Welcome. Fun to know the history. Pictures would help us share our thoughts.

Hello, Rich. Welcome to Straight Razor Place!
Did your wife indicate whether her father used the razor for shaping or shaving the whole face? I find smaller razors to be awkward to strop and shave with, much preferring blades in the 5/8 to 6/8 range. However, if the razor is in good condition, why not get it honed and try it out. Maybe you could post a picture.

Hello and welcome to SRP.
The razor looks to be in nice shape. It is a little on the narrow side for learning, but perfectly useable if properly honed. Whatever you decide to do, make sure your razor of choice is shave ready.
Good luck and enjoy your time here on the forum.

Thanked: 2Thanks for the welcomes. My wife said she would email her father for more information on the razor. I would definitely have it honed first before I think about using it. I have a Parker shavette inbound so I will give that a try and who knows what else.
