Not familiar with your location, maybe a better lusting in your profile to narrow down, but if your anywhere near Australia you have Oz, he can help, as a matter of a fact do a member search there are quite a few guys down under. Tc

Thanks Eddy, I’ll be visiting Perth at the end of March. Would it be worthwhile connecting then? Perhaps you know someone there who can hone my Gotta or show me how it’s done.

I learned to hone while I learned to shave and strop out of necessity as there was nobody local to me that honed razors and constantly sending one out frequently to be honed was too expensive. I understand how frustrating learning everything at once can be but sometimes you do not have much of a choice, unfortunately. Another idea would be to pick up a used shave ready razor from the BST here. That way you would have an idea of what a shave ready edge feels like and have a razor as back up for the time your other razor is away for honing.

Getting a backup razor is a good idea Bob, thanks again for your advice.

A little homework and you will certainly find all the answers to your questions.

Thanks Pete, certainly seems like there’s a wealth of info in SRP, I just found the site this weekend and have read a bit of the info so far. Wish I’d found SRP earlier.

Garry there are no reasonable services in Perth but if Im available would be able to hone for you and give you a lesson. PM me when you know what is happening and will see if we can arrange it.

Grazor might know of more local services and places to buy so a PM to him might help too.

Gday mate, and welcome aboard. Glad your wanting to hone your own, its very rewarding to shave off your own edge. Soon, you'll find that edge that feels just right for you, and your face.

Prepare yourself for many hours at the hones, especially if you take on total edge restoration's. Learn to torque the blade, instead of pushing it down on the stone. (Pressure)

The idea is, too keep light pressure on the spine so it stays flat, and on the hone, while applying greater torque on the blades edge, by twisting the tang with your fingers.

Tons of good videos on the "Tube", but hooking up with someone in your area for some hands on, one on one, help, is the best way to reduce the learning curve.

I'm self taught, and been honing and sharpening things since I was 7 or 8 years old, I took on my first straight at the age of 17. But finding this forum, and learning a few tricks from the library, videos, and the fine members, ITS A WHOLE NEW BALL GAME...!! some awesome shaves lie ahead, my friend, just hang in there.!!

So give the palace a good walkabout, and let us know how things are going, and if you have any questions.
    Mike
