Thanked: 0Newbie Here
Hello, My name is Steve and I am in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Decided to give up cartridge razors about a month ago and started looking into using a straight razor. After watching many videos on youtube, I decided to go the DE route because I have never been good at sharpening things and knew at some point I would have to hone my straight razor and didn't want to mess it up. The fascination would not go away, so I bought a shavette last week to test the waters. Here to learn.

Thanked: 4828That all sounds very sensible, except the part about having to hone your own razors. A razor can go for a very long time with stropping only. There are a lot of guys out there that hone, some that hone very well, and it is quite inexpensive. Both the DE and the shavette will help you learn about lather and soap and brushes as well as angle and pressure. If you change your mind down the road what you have learned is a foundation for straights. Some shavette are nicer to use than others. I hope you enjoy your journey. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome my new friend. Glad to have you in the group. A lot of good people here that are very willing to help you in your learning of the straight. I've never used a shavette but I hear they are not very forgiving. You can pick up a user grade straight here on the buy, sell, trade thread for a low cost, and if it is sold as shave ready, it will actually be shave ready. Not like you would find at most stores.
So dive in and get the straight. As Shaun said, the razor shouldn't need honing for a while. A decent strop will keep it going for a long time. But even stropping takes time to learn. It's always best to have 2 razors. One to use and one to compare the sharpness of the first. When the first needs honing, it can be done for as little as 20 bucks and you break out the second razor while the first is being honed.
Ask all the questions you want. Join in on the fun. We do have a couple guys that still use DE razors but 99% of the time its straight razors here. But you're still more than welcome. The rabbit hole you will fall into will be steep so watch your wallet and credit cards. Ha.It's just Sharpening, right?

Hi and welcome aboard. From what I have read a shavette and straight are still different in feel. Its a good place to learn the basics though and would make the transition to straights much easier.
Some say it is actually easier to use a straight than a shavette so if it's going well might be time to step it up. Good luck and any questions feel free to ask.My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Welcome to SRP!
I started with a shavette as well. The straight uses a lower angle and I find it to be more comfortable, but the shavette did get me over the fear of slicing my own throat open. It took me about a month to switch to a straight and I only use the shavette about once a year now. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski
