Thanked: 25I recommend watching Lynn Abram's videos on YouTube. He has a video on everything you need such as lathering, how to strop, how to hone and how to shave with a straight. Get yourself a couple nice razors. You can pick up vintage "Shave Ready" razors for $60.00 to $80.00 bucks right here. Stay away from ebay. If you buy new, all the razors from Straight Razor Designs come to you shave ready. Spend some time learning to strop your razor. It is a learned skill but its not hard. Try to focus on light, weight of the blade only on your strop and take your time! Go Slow!
Welcome aboard. You will love it and there's no going back. LOL

Thanked: 25YES! Welcome!!
You can buy a very nice Vintage Razor on this site that will come to you Shave Ready! You can pick up a nice one for $60 or you can buy a new Dovo, Ralph Aust, or Boker from Straight Razor Designs. For the most part NEW razors are NOT shave ready out of the box but if you buy from SRD it will be professionally honed and shave ready out of the box when you get it. Buy a nice 3" wide strop. SRD offers Strops that are as nice as anything out there and very reasonably priced. Watch Lynn Abrams YouTube Videos on how to Shave with a straight, how to strop, and how to hone of you want to learn to hone. I strongly suggest you eventually have at least three or four razors so that you can rotate them thereby extending the time between honing. I've been a Straight Shaver for 30 years. It isn't rocket science. You will love it. You'll love trying new soaps and creams. Invest in a nice Silver Tip Badger Shaving Brush. The Thater 4125 series is as nice a brush as you can buy anywhere. Remember when you strop weight of the blade only on the leather, go slow. When you shave let the razor do the work. If the razor pulls STOP and do not continue with that razor. You can try to strop it some and see of that does the trick but the razor is not supposed to pull at all not even a little! Personally I never shave against the grain or across the grain. I do two passes with the grain. Shaving across and against the grain can result in ingrown hairs. I get a silky smooth shave on two passes with the grain. Lots of help here. I am retired and a full time beach bum. You can email me at [email protected] or you can give me a call anytime 850-814-3331. Always glad to help. And I'll hone your razor free of charge if you ever have one that needs honing. I use Naniwa Super Stones finishing on a 12K. Have fun

Thanked: 1Thanks for all of the tips. I purchased another Razor. It was a Ramapo Co - Warranted from the 1800's, rehoned of course, and it works much better than the razor emporium razor.

Welcome! just make sure you have a properly honed razor, good quality soap, make sure your skin is taught, and your shave angle is low and you will not cut your face off for sure.
