Thread: Hello from South Carolina

Been lurking for a little while now. Not new to wet shaving, started with vintage Gillette, Schick, Gem then went with Feather shavette then to straights. Currently have a Dovo Special and Dovo Astrale straight razor. Now have more questions than answers. Hope to learn and figure out what I am doing. Thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum. I've been straight razor shaving for 30 years. give a shout out to me or the others if you need help or advice. There is no steep learning curve for how to shave with a straight. Very important that you are stropping correctly and your razor has been honed to shave ready. Dovos for the most part are not Shave ready from the factory. I recommend Straight Razor Designs for supplies. Their strops are as nice as anything on the market. If you buy a razor from them it will be shave ready straight out of the box when you get it. If you want to learn to hone it's a fun hobby or you can send your razor to SRD and they'll turn it around very quickly for $20.00 I highly recommend adding a few razors so that you can rotate them thereby extending the time before the razor needs a tune up on a hone. I have eight in my current rotation. I recently tuned all of them to hanging hair sharp so by using an 8 razor rotation I wont have to go to the hone again for 18-20 months. You can but a very nice 3" wide strop at SRD for $70-90 bucks. I use their 3" wide English Bridle leather. Remember weight of the blade only when you strop and when you shave let the razor do the work. And lastly, if you begin your shave and the razor pulls at all, stop and do not continue the shave with That razor. Either strop it or go to another razor or finish with a safety razor. No point in getting cut or scraping em off. Have fun

Welcome aboard a fellow southerner. You have very nice razors. I suggest watching the Lynn Abrams Videos on YouTube about Shaving with straight razors, honing, and how to strop. You can mail your razors to someone to be honed but you must master how to strop the razor. Remember, weight of the blade only on your strop. If you have not yet bought a nice strop I suggest Straight Razor Designs 3” wide strops. They are as nice as any you will find and a very good price. I use the 3” wide English Bridle Leather strop from SRD. If you have not yet bought a nice brush I suggest a Thater 4125 bulb in whatever size you prefer. I’d go with a three band brush. I have two and three band and can’t tell much difference. Three Band is less expensive. You can find them at SRD OR MAGGARD RAZORS. There is no way to stress strongly enough how much more enjoyable your shave will be with a really fine brush. Everyone has their favorites but I think most will agree you certainly can’t go wrong with a Thater Brush. Welcome aboard good luck and good shaving.
