Thanked: 0Hello from North Idaho
Hello from North Idaho. I ended up here after researching a few old things I forgot I had. I found my great grandfathers shaving mug I inherited and a straight razor I got from a friends grandfather. I am brand new to this and don't know exactly where to start. The razor looks like it needs some work and I started to polish the silver cup. Any help would be appreciated, and I will keep reading. Thanks.

Welcome to srp.
You live near to one of our members who hones and restores a lot. Look him up. Could be very helpful in this new learning of straight razors. If he has the time.
As Mike said, check out our library and read the section for newbies learning to use a straight. The library is full of great info. Dont be afraid to ask questions but do try to look things up with the search button. It will get you a lot but we are still very happy to answer questions.
Enjoy and go slow. A great shave is just a few mo ths away if you keep at it so dont get discouraged if you dont get great shaves right away. The main thing in learn to use a straight is to have a professionally honed razor to learn on. Dont try to learn to hone, learn to shave first! It's just Sharpening, right?

get it honed by Gssixgun in Sandpoint, you need a properly honed razor, a decent strop and some soap and a brush. read all you can on beginning, and then learn to prep, strop, and shave, it takes a few months but well worth it. dont rush into anything and take it slow and steady. Glen is one of the best guys you can have close to you, but even if not that close the mailbox is right in front of you for sending the razor to be honed

Agree wholeheartedly with TC's recommendation. Glen (gssixgun) of Gem Star Customs will hook you up into shaving bliss for a reasonable amount.
OBTW, helps to provide your Location in the Profile for things such as mentoring, shave meets, etc.
Welcome to the forum.--Mark

Thanked: 634Welcome. You are at the right place. First start in the library. Read, watch videos. Ask all the questions you want. The people here love to share their knowledge. Next send the razor out to be professionally cleaned and honed. In the forums you will find members near you that hone razors. That way you will get the best out of the razor and a feel for what a properly honed razor feels like. You will need a Strop. Look on the B-S-T. Good equipment at reasonable prices. Use an old belt and dull knife to practice stropping before slicing a good strop with a razor. Soap, bowl and brush. VanDerHagen sells a starter set at CVS or Walgreens that will get you going.
Most important it to post pictures of what you have. Good luck and enjoy.

With that end of the State being so thin, im guessing you are within driving distance of Glen in Sandpoint. Send him a PM.

Hello and welcome to SRP.
If you are close and could make the arrangements, there is nothing more valuable than face to face time with a person of experience.
Enjoy the learning and your time here on the forum.
