Thanked: 0Thanks for the warm welcome and all the positive comments and encouragement.
I fully realise that I am putting the cart before the horse and the tail is wagging the dog, or is that the cart is wagging the dog or the dog is in the cart, or whatever.
I think my next step is to get the Bengall re-honed before I dunk any stones in water and get some straight shaves under my belt. I am really enjoying the wet shaving rabbit hole with the soaps and DE razors etc - only problem is that what happens with my Fatboy and Rockets etc once I get proficient with the straight and like shaving with it?
Meanwhile here is a picture of the razor that started it all, my Grandad's Bengall Imperial. These razors were imported into Australia in large numbers during the middle and early part of the 20th century. They were made in Sheffield by Thomas Cadman and Sons. The picture is before I had it honed and cleaned up - it looks good and looks even better now. Really keen to get this thing going and shave just like Grandad did, except for the fancy brushes and artisan soaps of course.
cheers
Andrew

That's nice! It. Looks to be in good condition and should do well for you. Hard to see much detail up close but the bevel looks.straight narrow and even. It's nice to have an heirloom. I shaved with my Dad's razor this morning. Always makes me think of him.

Thanked: 4826Welcome to the forum. The heirloom razor is a bad place to start learning. Save it for when you get good at it. I use mine when I’m feeling nostalgic. I started with shave ready razors. I learned to hone on really nice NOS razors and a couple of new ones. No matter how you choose to adventure down the rabbit holes, we are here to help. The adventure into honing can be one of several routes. There are quite a few members that reside in the same country. I know it’s a giant country, but they will make themselves and their locations known soon I’m sure.

Hay, Cobber! Welcome.(can you be a Cobber at Sydney?)
Bengalls are much plenty in AU. Dig 2 feet under the road and it will be paved with Bengall base.
Seems AU was the main import target for the buggers. Save it for later and indulge in non-heirloom stuff as the wise Rezdog has advised. Some Sheffield specimens will get you into a learning curve if you pick the later, more hollow ones in good nick.
Once you learn your stuff, you can do the old thing justice! JMO

Know he used to do honing but unsure now. Substance does restoration and custom razors and he could likely help but is up in Qld so would need to post.

Gday Andrew & welcome aboard.
I used to live in Sydney but I escaped & am living down the south coast at Bodalla enjoying retirement & bushfires.
I used to hone for people but gave that away when I started full time caring for my dad. He's since passed but I still have no idea which cardboard box contains my hones. I'll get unpacked one day I guess but not long out of fight & flight mode & we still have bush smouldering here.
So for now, you have Dion (Substance) & Maladroit & Ed that can help you out with the honing. Nice Bengall btw. Always consistent quality with that make.
Last piece of advice, get yourself a can of Inox-MX3 & use it on your blades after shaving. Best insurance you can get against that rust inducing Sydney humidity.Last edited by onimaru55; 02-27-2020 at 11:48 PM.
