Welcome to the forum. The heirloom razor is a bad place to start learning. Save it for when you get good at it. I use mine when I’m feeling nostalgic. I started with shave ready razors. I learned to hone on really nice NOS razors and a couple of new ones. No matter how you choose to adventure down the rabbit holes, we are here to help. The adventure into honing can be one of several routes. There are quite a few members that reside in the same country. I know it’s a giant country, but they will make themselves and their locations known soon I’m sure.

Hay, Cobber! Welcome.(can you be a Cobber at Sydney?)
Bengalls are much plenty in AU. Dig 2 feet under the road and it will be paved with Bengall base.
Seems AU was the main import target for the buggers. Save it for later and indulge in non-heirloom stuff as the wise Rezdog has advised. Some Sheffield specimens will get you into a learning curve if you pick the later, more hollow ones in good nick.
Once you learn your stuff, you can do the old thing justice! JMO

Know he used to do honing but unsure now. Substance does restoration and custom razors and he could likely help but is up in Qld so would need to post.

    Gday Andrew & welcome aboard.

I used to live in Sydney but I escaped & am living down the south coast at Bodalla enjoying retirement & bushfires.
I used to hone for people but gave that away when I started full time caring for my dad. He's since passed but I still have no idea which cardboard box contains my hones. I'll get unpacked one day I guess but not long out of fight & flight mode & we still have bush smouldering here.

So for now, you have Dion (Substance) & Maladroit & Ed that can help you out with the honing. Nice Bengall btw. Always consistent quality with that make.

Last piece of advice, get yourself a can of Inox-MX3 & use it on your blades after shaving. Best insurance you can get against that rust inducing Sydney humidity.
