    Chris
You are going to need a strop. Check B-S-T. In a pinch you can use newspaper or the inside of an old leather belt.
Practice with some kind of full knife to get muscle memory. Make sure you keep it flat and in contact with strop. At end of stroke flip over on spine for the return stroke.
Any questions Just ask or check the library.

Welcome Chris. You were told correctly that a traditional straight is (in most cases at least) easier than a shavette ASSUMING it is well honed and that you know how to strop it. Oh yeah...as bouschie said. You'll need a strop at the bare minimum for a traditional straight razor. There is more to it than it seems on the surface, which you have already found out, but it gets easier with a little practice. We've all been there. Once a little water passes under the bridge it is well worth it. The Shave Library is a great resource. Also the beginner's section on the front page is full of great information.
It's true you are in the right place and that there are a lot of people here to help. You have heard from some already who were where you are just a year or more ago who are now seasoned at the art so don't get discouraged or overwhelmed. Just go slow, have fun with it and keep your ears and eyes open. We're here for you.
Just remember this: we take a daily duldrum and have turned it into a cool hobby. HOW AWESOME IS THAT, HUH? And you get to be part of it.

As far as the shavette goes, ive tried a few and only the Feather Shavette will touch my face. The others were junk as i couldnt get a cmfortable shave with them at all. And some were so bad they wouldnt hold a blade solid enough to use it. So keep that n mind if you plan on using the shavette.
