What’s good from VA
What’s going on y’all! Names Rob and I’ve been persistently shaving with straight razors for about a year now. My first straight was a Razor Emporium Gold Dollar back in 2019 and I shaved until it got dull. At that time, I had no idea about honing, or the various groups out there for this stuff. So I ultimately hung it up and stuck to just DEs for a while. I ended up finding a shaving group, asked about getting the razor honed, got pointed to Glen, and it’s been a wrap since then. Stumbled upon this magical new rabbit hole and have dug deeper since then.
I upgraded to a few modern razors and some vintage. I love shaving with straight razors now and very rarely use my DEs anymore. What brought me here was Glen thought. About six months ago I had a member of one of the FB groups offer to do a honing tutorial on a messenger chat and decided I wanted to learn to hone.
Since then, I’ve picked Glen’s brain a lot to learn tips and tricks to chase the perfect edge. I started with the SHAPTON Ha No Kuromaku Ceramic 1k & 5k, and the Naniwa Gouken Kagayaki 8k and 12k stones. I learned to achieve a pretty good edge on those, then ventured to the world of JNATS.
I picked up an Ozuku Mizu Koppa, an Asano Makiwa Nagura set (Botan, Tenjyou, and Mejiro), and some Tomo Nagura Extra from the JNS site. Been playing with the Nagura progression and the edges are getting better, but there’s so much room to grow. I have a Nakayama Kiita Koppa and some various Tomo Naguras on the way to play with other edges and variables.
Ultimately Glen is the reason I stopped by to check out the forum and create an account. He said there is a ton of knowledge here and that y’all are extremely helpful and willing to share your knowledge. I’m still very new to honing and know just enough to get myself in trouble lol. Def want to browse through the site and learn from y’all here. Hope everyone has a good one!

Welcome to the forum Rob. If straights and hones are your rabbit hole then you are in the right place. We can even help you develop a few other "aquisition disorders" too.

Thanked: 556Welcome. You seem to have got a running start at this straight razor shaving and honing thing and seem well along the way to establishing all of the recognized acquisition disorders SRP enables. Starting with Glen was a real advantage.
As mentioned previously, we love pictures. So share.David

Originally from Texas. Landed in VA after I left Great Mistakes in 2007. Fortunately for the kids, I've been stationed here since so they've had stability.
