    I am just starting out will get my first straight razor this week and I'm left handed so I hope this won't hold me back

    Welcome to SRP. Glad to see you joined us. There is plenty of information here to help you get started and if you don't find what you're looking for just ask and someone will jump in to help.

    Straight razors are non handed so your orientation should not be an issue. In fact, a lot of people shave with both hands. Just take your time, go slowly and don't get discouraged. It takes a while to learn. The rule of thumb(or maybe of face ) is 100 shaves is what it takes to become proficient. That sounds like a lot but even if you shave every other day it's less than a year. Before you know it you'll be the one helping out the new guy. Which brings up another point. Don't be afraid to ask. We have all been new to this and there are lots of guys out there eager to help you along.

    One piece of advice to start: start with the broad, uncomplicated parts like the cheeks. The chin and upper lip around the nose are wavy and complicated plus the whiskers are more coarse and dense there. If you don't get them clean at first it's okay. Maybe save the clean up for a DE to start. The ergonomics will come with practice.

    Welcome to the forum!
    Where did you get your razor from? Is it supposed to be shave ready?
    You will need a strop right away as well, hopefully you have that on order too.

    Is it a new razor, or used vintage. Either way, it needs to be honed to shave ready before use.

    Well did my first straight razor shave today and this is exactly how I did it just my cheeks and no problem at all no nicks at all

    I have a 100 year old vintage German razor and it's sharp but I also have a new Ralf Aust on the way it should be here on Friday
