So you sailed in a Sturgeon and Los Angeles class fast attack sub. Fantastic! Glad to hear that you enjoyed sub duty. I teach military history in college, which includes some discussion of U. S. Naval history. I also build 1/350 scale ship models when I have the time; and one I recently finished is the U. S. S. Los Angeles.

As for your thoughts on a str8 razor...You are taking the same road I did. Bought a DE last fall and used it until this December, then got bitten by the str8 razor bug. I guess it was visiting all those wet shaving websites to purchase shave creams and blades for my DE. I still use my DE during the weekday, but IME there is nothing quite as relaxing as the ritual of a str8 razor shave on the weekend.

The fellows at Straight Razor Place will be able to offer you a lot of good advice on purchasing a str8 razor. The wiki at SRP also has a ton of useful information.

The Vintage Blades LLC website also has some useful information and an inventory of really nice razors. I think it is located in MD. The owner, Jim Ayres, gave me some useful advice when I was thinking about buying my first str8 razor--a Dovo Black Star. Straight Razor Designs is also a good website to check out when you decide to take the plunge. I warn you, though, str8 razor shaving is like Lay's Potato Chips...Nobody can shave with just one. (LOL)

I was referred here as a good source of information by a member of Badger and Blade forum. My name is John and I'm 45 years of age and live in Melbourne, Australia. I've recently returned to the simple pleasure of DE shaving and spending many years using both an electric and disposables. Today I purchased my first straight razor. It is an EKS that is in pretty good condition but needs a hone and could you with a little clean up to make it completely shave ready. I've always been intrigued by the art of straight shaving so I thought that I'd give it a try.
I try to enjoy the good things in life like decent suits, nice shoes, good coffe, expensive wristwatches, the occassional good cigar and now a good shave. I used to enjoy a good red wine and measure of a good spirit but decided that I probably enjoyed them too much so I stopped earlier this year. I currently work as a Global Risk Manager for a division of Shell so I get to travel around the world for work a reasonable amount.

Hey, just got my first straight razor for Christmas after 2 years of asking for one, along with the kit and everything. I like the fact that the razors are something you keep, hone and sharpen for years and years in a world where everything is so disposable. Last night I tried my hand at honeing, and not sure I get it just yet, but will. I'm gonna go through some of the other posts now... Great site!:tu

hello, everyone! my name is matt and im about a month into doing the whole straight razor thing, I have always been interested in it and just decided to take the leap, and now im addicted, all my home pages are straight razor related and its awesome!!!!

Ok maybe just ready to slice those whiskers off hopefully there won't be too much dicing :). I am ready to take the plunge. After immersing myself in the wonderful world of wetshaving with a DE and trying out so many great soaps and creams and enjoying some great shaves I knew it would come to this. I wanted to jump straight in to str8's a few years ago but I thought that was just too tall of mountain to scale. But I now realize
I was walking on a slippery slope using my HD and lurking on these shave forums always peeking at all the str8 sections.

So I am waiting for my 6/8 DOVO special and Filly practice strop. I wanted to start slow and with something new in order to take advantage of the deal at SRD. It was a hard fight between the Bismark and the special but this one won out. I may get the Bismarck later along with many others. I've been pretty good at sticking to just my faithful HD DE but I don't think I will be able to resist these Str8's. They're just a work of art for an art that I am glad I found.

Great choice in a str8 razor. You won't be disappointed. I recently purchased a Dovo from SRD like you and have begun to learn how to strop and shave with my "masterwork in steel."

The SRP wiki as well as the various forums will provide you with lots of useful information about the care and use of your razor and strop. I also found Lynn Abrams' dvd, "World of Straight Razor Shaving" invaluable as I ventured into str8 razor shaving.

if you were ordering at srd anyways i think you should've opted for their strop instead of the fili. when you get it in a set with the razor it's $30 and the fabric component and the real hardware are well worth the $10 more.

i'm sure you'll be happy with your set up.
