Fred,
If you are new to straight razors, stick with the feather with the pro guard blades and learn it good. That is a fantastic system and you don't have to learn the honing and stroping. If you bought the all stainless you can boil it to clean it, thats a plus right there. But you did make a good decision in the feather artist.

Thanked: 1Thanks for the encouragement Superspot. I find that I have difficulty getting a close shave on my chin and oddly enough the right side of my face because im right handed. I guess that is something I have to get used to.
I have also noticed that when the stubble grows back in it seems more rough and sandpaper-like(maybe due to the angle the hair is shaved at?)
I just tried to bid on a VINTAGE Straight Razor King Razor Mfg Shave Ready 5/8 from ebay but I sadly didnt want to bid as high as the 28 dollars the auction got up to.
Do any of you have any suggestions on a cheaper starter straight razor or know of anyone who's willing to sell me one already sharpened so i can try that out when I am ready?

If you start with something cheap you end up with something cheap that you will never be satisfied with. If you want quality that is going to last, get a Dovo. Several of the vendors can offer shave ready models but that is not going to last forever. You are going be out the expense of hones, strops, etc, or you can send them to be sharpened and that is another expense. Dont rush if you have the Artist Club. Stick with it and learn it, later go to the other blades. Feather even offers it in Teak Wood if you just want the high end look. You may down the road decide a straight is not what you want or what is right for you then you have two razors collecting dust. Be patient.
Keep it smooth,

And by the way ........ the Artist Club in "Teak" is going to be my next new one. It will look good sitting next to the stainless one. : )

Thanked: 1So you're saying that when I do make the switch I should buy the best I can get for the money I have? I have heard Dovo is good and was thinking about buying a cheaper disposable Dovo. I guess you could say I went for one of the best right away with my feather.
The only thing I was disappointed at was the handle material of the feather. I thought it would be a harder type of plastic than what it really is. But, with that being said the blade holder is very high quality and that is what really matters.
I am now working on getting different kinds of shaving creams and soaps to experiment with.
I did have some discomfort when I shaved the first time with my feather. Not sure if that was because I didnt have enough shaving cream or didnt get the angle right or what, and I guess the shave wasnt as close as I expected but I didnt really do more than 1 pass either.
Any tips would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanked: 1Yes, It is my first straight. I guess I can say I am proud I didn't cut myself up too much given the reputation of the feathers blades..lol

This may be a strange wat to compare things but I own a Glock 21 45acp and a Colt 1911 45acp. The "plastic" Glock feels diffrent but they both throw the same bullet down range, and that's what counts. Think about it just a min.

Thanked: 1I definitely agree with that analogy. The handle doesnt really serve any function but being something to hold onto and the real heart of the razor is the blade holder which I can tell is very high quality
When I shaved the other night with it I only had about 3 days of beard growth. I want to let my beard grow for at least a week and see how it shaves if that makes any difference.
