TattooJohnnie droping in to say hello
Hello Everybody,
I’ve been using a DE for three years this January, and I’d ready to make the jump to straight razor shaving. I do have a heavy beard with tissue paper, sensitive skin, so I’m sure my learning curve will be longer than most. I do want to give myself every chance to succeed at this, so if you have any suggestions to offer, I’d be most appreciative.
Happy New Year,
JohnLast edited by Doc; 01-09-2010 at 06:32 AM.

Welcome to SRP Johninie. Shaving with a DE for three years makes for an easier transition since you will already have multiple pass shaving with no pressure, preparation, and lathering learned. Check out the SRP beginner's guide here. As far as tissue paper skin, the straight razor shave won't hurt nearly as much as a tattoo.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Welcome to SRP Johninie. As Jimmy mentioned, the WIKI is a great place to start. Also the stocky notes at the top of the beginner's forum. Be sure to buy a professionally honed razor or get it honed by a member offering the service in the classified section. When buying a straight check the WIKI for brands to avoid and the more common preferred list. Ask questions on what you dont understand and do not avoid vintage straight razors as a low cost alternative to new.

Welcome by! Good to see you. The transition shouldn't be TOO long...and once you make it, you won't turn back.

Thanked: 402Nice Rose!
Welcome Johnnie! Guess there's no beard that withstands a well honed blade.
(Or else we have to improve honing )
You'll see its fun!

TattooJohnnie,
Happy New Year to you and welcome to SRP.
Your foray into srtr8 razor shaving is a lot like mine. That is, I started by converting to DE shaving, then moved to str8 razor shaving last Christmas.
As the previous posts indicate, if you want to learn about str8 razor shaving then you have certainly come to right place. SRP contains an extensive wiki as well as forums which provide a wealth of information about pre and post-shave preparation, razors and shaving technique, etc. Last, but not least, the Classifieds provide an opportunity to purchase quality vintage razor restorations from reputable vendors who are also SRP members like the rest of us.
You'll also find the members to be very helpful in addressing specific questions you have or providing emotional and instructional support during your str8 razor sojourn. You even have the opportunity to post your memorable shave(s), whether (DE or str8) on the "Shave of the Day" forum. Check it out!
One final thing...If you have very sensitive skin, the following is a shaving preparation technique discovered by a SRP member, Maximillian, that is sometimes referred to as the "Robeson" method that results in close, smooth, irritation free shaves. I tried it today with my Merkur DE and it definitely works. BTW...You can use bay rum in place of the witch hazel.
Again, welcome aboard.Last edited by jhenry; 01-16-2010 at 02:51 AM.
