Thanked: 0New girl has questions...
Hi! I'm new to SRP (though not completely unfamiliar with it) and was hoping you guys could help me out (and perhaps I could learn some things while I'm here).
Valentine's day is coming up, and I'd like to get my boyfriend something for his straight razor addiction. However, I have no idea what would be appreciated, appropriate, and thoughtful. I don't have a huge budget, but would like to get something nice to show that I'm interested in his hobby.
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated-this is the best idea I've got. And who knows, I may stick around SRP for a while and start using a straight razor myself.

Hi Marlee!
If you can't think of anything else, you may consider a gift cert from one of the on-line vendors that deal in wet-shave stuff. Most have such an option.

Hello and welcome. As for your question I must ask if he has a big collection of creams or soaps? If not, you can always get him a tub or puck of a nice quality product, all without breaking the bank. Check out the review sections to see what you might think he would like.

Welcome and feel free to hang around. Always happy to see new people.
You didn't mention your budget or how advanced your BF is - I'm assuming he still haven't made his first steps into this world.
You can see the beginner section in the wiki what is usually adviced to new people
Straight Razor Place Wiki:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place Wiki
More explicitly, you might want to read the shopping list, good brands and brands to avoid.
Please stay away from ebay - the chance of getting a bad blade is considerable if you don't know what to look for.
If you end up getting a razor, make sure it is honed to shave-ready state. This essentially means buying a blade off the classifieds here, or through reputable dealer.
Another idea is getting him a nice aftershave/cologne that you've scented out =).

The problem with gift giving is that you have to give equal too or more than what you get (at least that is how my mother raised me). Here in is the problem. Without knowing what he is going to give you, you can't really set an adequate price on the gift you give, and if you give him more than what he got for you, he could get embarrassed. You could play it safe and get creams or a sop, or even safer yet and get a gift card as some suggest, but how will he respond. I for one don't like gift cards unless it is from someone who I know gives crappy gifts and then I will say "just get me a gift card from x place" so I can buy what I want.
My recommendation is to take some pictures of what he already has, if anything, and let us take a look at it. Once we see his stash, likes/dislikes, we can provide more than enough suggestions.
I think Kentriv's post is pretty spot on, but we could so help you get a more refined and tailored present.

Welcome to SRP, Marlee.
Well, it really depends on your boyfriend. Hopefully he'll appreciate the gesture more than the actual gift.

New Girl Has Question
Hello, Marlee:
Welcome to SRP.
Your boy friend will love your gift of a straight razor or traditional shaving products.
I, too, recommend a gift certificate from any of the vendors noted on the pages of SRP. For Christmas, my daughter gave me a gift certificate to Straight Razor Designs and I was in heaven.
I bought a Dovo "Bismarck" in white bone handle — and have been smiling every since.
Regards,
Obie

Marlee, welcome to the group. It's nice to see another ladies face around A gift certificate to one of the Vendors or some nice soaps and creams as has already been mentioned is a great idea for V-Day. If you decide to get into straight razor shaving yourself wander on by the Ladies Corner. There is lots of info there or drop me a pm. I would be glad to talk to you about it.

Make a big deal of smelling his shave soaps so you can tell him which scents you like best. Pay special attention, and if he doesn't have Mitchells Wool Fat shave soap, get that for him!! The best there is, which of course is personal opinion. But, an opinion that is shared by many.
Possibly, you could remember the shave soaps he has and then reply here with the list. And, we could reply with our best "well, he really should have this soap/scent too" replies.
