    Default New to this

    Hi all,

Found this site after reading a newspaper article. It makes sense to use a straight razor from a "green" point of view.

Been shaving with a double edged razor. The replacement cartridges are very expensive. Then I discovered disposable double edge razors. I can buy a dozen of these for about a third of the cost for ten replacement cartridges.

I don't like the disposal part. These things are going to end up in a landfill. The less I leave in a landfill the better.

I discovered on here, that you just can't go out and buy a straight razor. You need to find one that is "shave ready".

How do you get a new straight razor shave ready?

If depends if you want to buy new or vintage. If you want new, there are several vendors that support this forum that sell shave ready razors. If you want vintage, there is probably no better place than the classifieds section here.

You make a razor shave ready by honing it. If the razor has never been honed this is a somewhat simple process provided that the razor is from a reputable manufacturer. If you buy a vintage razor, often they require some degree of restoration before you can hone them. Regardless what you decide, it is advisable that your first razor is honed by an expert, see the classified section under member services. Two additional recommendations: 1) avoid razors from Ebay or antique shops at first; 2) read the wiki for an overview of many interesting topics pertaining the world of straight razor shaving.

    Default Thanks

    Thanks.

I know I'm going to need a lot of other things beside the razor. I hope it doesn't cost a small fortune!

I looked at the beginner's guides last week. Felt a little overwhelmed. Was surprised at all that's needed and involved.

    G'day & welcome Peter.
Basically only a strop, razor, brush, soap & maybe some aftershave are essential so don't be overwhelmed.
