    Post Greetings From Alabama

I have been interested in using straight razors for quite sometime. Now I am starting to look at buying one, but don't know where to start. Any suggestions on any websites, as well as inexpensive brands would be useful.

Thanks for the info. I have been glancing over the Beginner's Guide the past few days. Mistakenly bought a disposable straight and got it the other day. Plan on using it for awhile and learn with it until i buy the real thing.

welcome to srp. Please dont buy cheap razors which is we call them razors to avoid.you will see most of them new razors.check wiki and some examples zeepk etc.gl and it is good idea prepare your face with changeable blade at first .after getting used to you can move to straights.

Thats what my intentions are, Learn off the changeable blade I have now, and graduate from there. Which is kind of why I purchased it, spent less than $20. So I'm not really out that much money.

    Depends on what you want.

If you're down with vintage, then the Classifieds on this site are a great place to start. Lots of razors on there, some custom-made beauties going for hundreds, and some roughed-up vintage razors that still take, and hold, a mean edge, going for 30 bucks.

I've noticed there's even a couple of "beginner's sets" floating around there from time to time.

If you want to go new, RupRazor and Straight Razor Designs both offer great bang for your buck, come shave ready, and won't disappoint.

Wapis and Gold Dollar/Double Arrows are the cheapest razors that are also decent shavers.

But if you want to buy a Gold Dollar/Double Arrow (same thing, as I understand) in particular, buy it from RupRazor. He sifts through his shipments and picks out the ones that have manufactoring flaws, so the one you get will be a good'un.

I personally have a Wapi, and it was my first razor. You can find them around NOS (New Old Stock, AKA unused) for $20-$30. Mine gives a good shave.

That said, beginner's sets are a very good value for money.

Whatever you do, you want to make sure you buy a razor that is SHAVE READY. This means honed by a professional with nothing but his hands and a stone. New razors often claim to come "shave ready" from the factory, but they aren't. They're pretty sharp. But usually not quite sharp enough to shave comfortable.

Straight Razor Designs and RupRazor send all their razors truly shave ready, Most of the razors in the Classifields come shave ready as well, and they will state on the ad whether they do or not.

    Have fun!

    Drake1977,

    Welcome to SRP...

If you're looking for information to upgrade from your disposable str8 razor, you've come to the right place.

The SRP "Classifieds" is a great place to purchase vintage razors that are shave ready. I have purchased two from vendors who advertised in the "Classifieds," and are also SRP members, and thoroughly enjoyed the shaves I have gotten from their restored razors.

Whatever you do, though, stay away from ebay at this stage of your str8 razor experience. You're better off checking out the vintage str8 razors advertised here by SRP members or Vintage Blades (an SRP adertiser), where I have also purchased a vintage str8 razor.

    Welcome aboard and happy shaving.
