Thanked: 1New guy from England
Hi guys
I stumbled onto this site by accident, looking at knife videos.then I saw a guy using a Straight razor, but the razor thing isn't really an accident, I guess I'm moving back to traditional things, they just feel right, I collect knives and it used to be Spydercos and Benchmades.now it's Case and Great eastern.....and shaving with a blade really fits into my philosophy..............I have an "oyster" razor that I bought about 30 years ago, I've used it a couple of times when I was younger, but gave up on it..now I'm back with a vengance........blade has one spot of rust on it, which I think will clean up with some high grit paper.I'm not sure how sharp it is, or the correct way to strop or shave.I've had three or four shaves with it...and I can't say they have been great shaves, but each one has been better than the last, so I'm getting there.
In my country we have the curse of " health and safety" which is part of the greater evil of political correctness...........and folks over here would gagg if I told them I liked straight razors.which to me is all part of the fun.........also I shave my head!! ....so I have so much more to look forward to

Hello!
I would suggest you grab an inexpensive shave ready blade from the classifieds. It'll be a good comparison for you for the existing blade you have. A shave ready blade can do more for you than you'd imagine. It can improve things no end!
If it reveals that your current blade is lacking, send it off to Steve at The Invisible Edge. That way you'll have a spare.
There are suppliers here, but the classifieds are invaluable resource. Trusted sellers & most will ship to us over here.

Thanked: 1Well I've had my razor and strop for many years...When I first tried shaving I could get nowhere, now I'm just a little bit on from that, I still cannot get a good shave, but at least I know that it takes time to acquire the skill.just like developing a taste for beer
.......I have been thinking about getting one of those razors which you attach blades to...........just to learn, and also knowing that it is shave ready, I mean to use one all the time would really detract from the reasons for getting a straight razor in the first place.

Hey guys, I'm a new member and having been shaving with str8 disposable for about two weeks now and I also shave my head! The shavette has been great for getting a feel and I was using to decided whether str8s were for me.
Advise for the shaving the head is go SLOW and FOCUS! I can't emphasize that enough as I got distracted the first time and gave myself a pretty nasty cut on the back of my head. Also, get a good pair of mirros for the back of your head so you can see what you're doing. Angles are easy to feel out but missing spots just aint cool. Get used to working backwards through the mirrors with something not so sharp as a sideways slice could happen quite easily if you're not used to that. Since then, I'm shaving my head about twice a week my face everyday, and haven't had any issues.
I find if I go slow, get used to the motion one simple stroke at a time, and above all focus like my life depends on it, the process becomes quite enjoyable and easier with time. Keep at it and your head will be shiny in no time.
That's my expierence thus far, let me know how the head goes.

Thanked: 12Hello mate. We are both from cities with high population of 'knackers'. So i have been getting some wary reactions from shop keepers when I ask about razor availability.
I have also found each shave to be better than the last. I also have been practising honing with a 5k/8k hone which has been fun.
Just watch the addiction. Ive only been interested in this for 3 months but since my first shaves 2 weeks ago ive gone on a spending spree adding another 2 razors, 3 strops and umpteen new soaps and creams. Awesome.
Welcome to the SRP. Shave on

Thanked: 1I haven't seen any razors worth having in the local shops, but there are quite a few on ebay, and in sites in Germany and the US.....I plan on getting one of those ones that you put razor blades in.just to get me going, I can't say that I have had a good shave yet, but that will come with time and knowledge, initially I did just one pass.now I've started on two.might even get to three..even with a triple head safety razor I don't always get a great shave.so I'm looking forward to getting there....also busy reading all the instructual posts on this site, great resource for us "Sweeney Todd types"
