    Default greeting from Los Angeles

For about 12 days, I've been shaving with a no name straight razor, that takes 1/2 DE blades. As someone somewhere suggested, I have been slowly expanding the amount of my face I do with the straight. Today, for the first time, I finished the job, without resorting to the dreaded triple blade.

I found a vintage, USA, "Spike" straight on Cragslist, with strop for $20. The blade had a nick, and a slight S curve. I soon sorted that with diamond stone, and Buck Crocksticks, but it still wasn't quite right. (no surprise, I need more stones to do the job correctly.) So, today I dropped the razor off at Ross Cutlery Untitled Document, in downtown LA. They have a nice selection of new, restored., and NOS straight razors. I spent so long looking at knives, barber supplies, and razors, that I missed having my motorcycle towed from the no parking parking after 3pm zone by two minutes. As I pulled out, the tow truck was backing up to get the car behind me. That Spike, nearly went from around $40 shave ready, to $300.

Whoa! Bad luck on the bike!

I hope you enjoy your new straight. I think you will find it different than the disposable but possibly more forgiving.

    Have fun!

    Ulrich,

    Welcome to SRP...

From your description of your narrow escape from the parking police, it appears that "The Force" is with you--especially if you also found some great deals on a vintage str8 razor or two at the cutlery store.

    Take care...

Welcome to SRP...I'm a Costa Mesa ex-pat. Since you're in LA, don't forget that an hour drive will take you to Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa (they sell Dovo) and a bit more to Palm Springs to visit Classic Shaving.

Thanks for the tip. I get down to Huntington Beach, one or two times a month, for the Roller Derby; Plaza is only another 10 miles down the road. I'll be sure to check them out, next time I'm down that way.

Groom-it Industries, is another good place in LA. (Atwatter Village) Very limited straights, but plenty of classic barber supplies.
