    Default Hello from Montreal

    Hi everyone,

I've been using my father's old Gillette "Fat Boy" safety razor for some years. I recently came across a couple of my grandfather's old straight razors. I'd squirreled them away long ago after nearly taking my head off trying to shave with them.....I'd never even seen someone use a straight razor so had no idea what I was doing.....And they were (and are still) in need of sharpening. I've done a little research on them (a Boker and a Mappin Brothers) and come up with some info on the Boker but not much on the Mappin Bros. I've also PM'd someone I found on this site inquiring about restoring/sharpening them but haven't heard back yet. If anyone has some history on Mappin Bros. or someone (in Canada) who does restoration I'd be glad to hear from you.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Welcome to SRP!

Both of those razors should end up being fine shavers. I really like the looks of your Boker. It is a beauty. It looks to me like the toe on your mappin may have been cut down to restore a chip. That won't hurt the function of it at all, but is a good thing to know about the razor if you ever sell it. (I say it looks cut down, because the blade is short for the scales it's wearing. It's also possible that it was rescaled with scales that were too long for the original blade)

Again, both are nice razors and should shave well.
Be sure to stick around, and do some reading so that you can utilize them to their full potential.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

Good eye HNSB! The Mappin does look short in that photo. I believe it's just an optical illusion though. (In other words. I took a crappy photo.) When closed the blade fits into the scales fairly snug.

    x2 on Floppyshoes.

My DOVO came prehoned by Floppy (DG) when I bought it from Fendrihan.

I was pleased with the edge.
