New here
Hello all,
I have been wet shaving with my meager collection of vintage Gillette razors for the past year. I have been looking in to trying a straight for a while now. I saw this forum listed in a post over on Badger and Blade and figured would be a great one to join.
I have not picked up a straight razor yet, Have my eyes on the ones I will post here further down. I am looking for opinions on if they maybe good razors, I am sure they will need a little clean up and honing. Also wanted an opinion on what a fair price maybe per each and as a set. After I find a good razor to work on, ill have to find a strop
From what I can tell they are as follows
Griffon Carbo Magnetic 60
917 Real Red Point Made in Germany by the Utica Knife & Razor Co
Black-Hawk????
F. A. Koch & Company, Faultless No.20

Welcome to SRP... Take the time to go through the wiki, it will help you out a lot as you are learning. as far as the razors you posted go, I'd stay away from the last one (faultless), it's got a frown to it that I think youd be glad to pass on. the others look like they could be good shavers after a pro honing.
Anyway, glad to see you
Cheers
Dave

Welcome to SRP. I can see you are a potential RAD sufferer like me and most of the rest of the membership. On SRP the policy is not to assess dollar value. Check ebay for specific brands and you'll get an idea of what they bring.
I've got one of those Red Points and it is a good shaver. Like Dave said a couple more look like they would be good once honed by a pro. For sure check out the SRP Wiki beginner's guide here .Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Did not know about the policy on assessing dollar value. I will remember that from now on. That said would you think they are worth putting some work in to to make them shave ready. I really like the scales on them just don't know if the blades are salvageable. That 4th one not so salvageable.

I would say they are all salvageable and potentially good shavers. The full bladed ones are more attractive than the other two but they can be put into service given some proper edge correction. The frowning blade is narrow to begin with but could be corrected and used. I would get the Red Point and the other full bladed one pro honed first and then use them as a bench mark for your own efforts and try to do the other two yourself. I say that assuming you already own them and are into beginning to hone your own. If not just buy the best two.

Thanked: 0there are plenty of razors out there. do take the time to read everything you can on here. there is a wealth of info in these forums. there is no feeling like that of a blade that you yourself have sharpened and now use. it is a feeling of accomplishment from beginning to end.
