Thanked: 2Pacific NW beginner
Hello all...
This morning I completed my seventh straight-razor shave (but who's counting). I started with a new Dovo Best Quality from SRD, and an inexpensive paddle strop. I am not happy with the paddle strop -- too narrow and too short - so I am going to invest in a hanging version soon.
My first shave was fun; trimmed my winter beard down to stubble with the clippers, then went to town with the straight - first shave in about six months. Skin was pretty tender after the beard. I also just about slashed a hole in my upper cheek (may have a slight scar) but on the bright side, that experience taught me to fricking respect the tool and not daydream like I could before! Since then each shave brings a tiny bit more skill. It is a fascinating experience and I'm a bit amazed that it has the power to hold me in front of the mirror for half an hour each morning (compared to shaving - half-asleep, mind you -- in 2-3 minutes in the shower before). I hope the novelty holds up.
My father is retired and regularly attends a lot of garage and estate sales for fun, looking for the odd bargain. I've asked him to keep an eye out for razors that appear to be in good condition; a few years back, he remembered picking up five razors for $2 (gone now of course). If he can repeat the experience, I'm sure he can find some decent ones for me to practice on.
Well, enough rambling. Thank you to all of the folks who maintain this site and its treasure trove of information - it is a huge help to beginners like me.

Welcome, Jay
Glad to hear you're not frightened by a small mishap. In my experience, straight razor cuts heal well if left alone with little or usually no scar at all.

Thanked: 1371Hi Jay,
It sounds like you are getting the hang of this stuff and getting some enjoyment out of it. Good deal!
For future reference, if you ever decide to grow a long beard again there really isn't a need to trim it before shaving. Just lather up, and wipe the beard right off your face!
Welcome to SRP!
