Default Not quite new to straight shaving

I have been straight shaving for about a year, but have been using a disposable blade straight razor. I have decided to start looking to buy my first traditional straight razor. What is the difference between 5/8 and 6/8? How different will they each feel while I am using them? Is it okay to buy used, even as a beginner? Also, I have read that it is recommended that a novice buy their first straight razor in person in a shop. I live in southeastern Georgia, about 45 minutes north of Jacksonville, Florida. Does anyone know of any place I can go in Jacksonville, or another nearby city (Saint Augustine, Savannah GA.) to buy one in person?

Welcome to SRP. A 5/8 is of course 1/8 of an inch narrower in blade width than a 6/8. I don't see or feel much difference but then again I'm used to both sizes. The general rule of thumb being that the smaller size is more maneuverable and if they were both full hollow grind the smaller one would be slightly stiffer with less flex. Really I don't think there is a dime's worth of difference although the 6/8 will probably cost ten to twenty dollars more. Just IMO.

I don't know of anywhere you could go buy a truly shave ready razor in person. Maybe someone else will. Buying from Straight Razor Designs, Classic Shaving or Vintage Blades is highly recommended IME. If you get one from SRD it comes shave ready at no extra charge and you get a certificate for a second honing free.

Check out the SRP Wiki here for more great info on shaving with a straight razor.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

G'day & welcome. Agree with Jimmy , not much difference in the feel or use between those 2 sizes.
As for shopping, as long as the razor IS "shave ready" that's the main thing. SRP classifieds could be another option.

Thanks guys. I have started looking through the SRP Classifieds, and I think I have found a razor that I am considering. It is a Dovo, which is better than I thought I would be able to buy right now, but can you really put a price on a great shave?
