Default Newb doin the intro thing...

    Hey gang. New guy here.

I received a shave kit from my brother, with claims of the ease and disappearance of razor burn and ingrowns.

So it has peaked my interest.

This is all bringing back fond memories of my grandfather, and watching him shave when I was a little kid.

Whatching a video recently, brought shivers to my spine - as the raspy tone of a hollow blade gave me a flood of emotional memories.

So I'm skipping the DE and going Straight!

I'll be starting with cartridges, to learn the lather. This will give me time to sharpen the blades and to purchase a strop.

Welcome to the group. I am sure you will find all the information you need to make your journey into straight razor shaving successful. One thing I would suggest though, is that you have your razors professionally honed for right now. Honing takes some time to learn and your face will thank you for starting out with a nice sharp razor. You can check out the Member services section in the classifieds to find someone that can hone your razors up for you.

Welcome to SRP and follow Carrie's advice and you'll be glad you did. The SRP Wiki beginners's guide is here.

    Welcome Loose Card!

Really read all of the beginner stuff in the Wiki before you start shaving or buy anything else. It will save you time and money in the long run. Definitely have someone else hone your razor to shave ready the first time. If you don't know what a sharp razor feels like you'll have no idea if you're honing it well or not when you shave test.

Be sure to post any questions you have, there's a very helpful group of people here.

    Again, welcome to SRP!
(now go read the beginner's guide in the wiki )

    Thanks for the advice.
It is pretty much what the plan is already!

I know I want USA made strop, figuring 3" width.
But I definitely need to do more reading, before I delve too deep.

I'm looking forward to all the help, and would like to thank everyone in advance.

    Welcome to SRP LooseCard...

+1 on CarrieM's advice. Hold off on honing your razor for now. You will have your hands full learning the basics of str8 razor shaving such as stropping, blade angle, etc. at this point.

Finally, if I may be so bold to ask...What type/brand of str8 razor came with your gift kit?

Actually, the kit was from Art of Shaving Co. 4 piece: prep, soap, badger brush, and aftershave.

I just got my hands on my grandfather's old razors for use, but more to come on those.

    Default Newb . . .

    Hello, Loosecard:

Welcome to SRP. Once you have your grandfather's razor honed, and with your starter kit all ready, you have a great start. Now take your time and enjoy the journey.

    Regards,
    Obie
