    Default New to SRP

Ok, so my straight razor curiosity is getting the better of me so I signed up for THE straight razor forum, SRP.

I've been shaving with a DE for three years now. Using slants with Feather blades for over a year. So now, I'm doing my homework before I take the plunge to a straight. Seems I have a LOT to learn.

I'll be poking around until I finally feel I have enough knowledge to not do myself harm and I finally pick up a straight. I'm sure I'll find plenty of great advice here.

Welcome to SRP Gafer. Before going straight the Merkur Slant with a feather was my shaver of choice. Been relegated to the closet for a couple of years now. Check out the SRP Wiki begginer's guide here and ask any questions you may have as they come up. Members are more than happy to help when they can.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    Default Thanks for the welcome

Thanks guys. I'm trying to remain patient and keep reading all I can about straight razors before I buy anything. I was wondering how in the world I could make the time to learn to shave with a straight and then I realized - shave in the evening! No, it's not the best time but it's when I can consistently work without being rushed. Plus I have a job that doesn't require me to be clean shaven every day. I suppose the added bonus would be I'd have 12 hours to get my face stitched if I really mess up. Seriously, I've watched several videos of guys shaving with straights and they make it look too easy. I'm hoping I will catch on fast with all my DE experience I bring to the table.

DE experience can help as you should already have mastered the art of making good lather and having good face prep skills.

Shaving in the evening is what many of the guys here do as a way to relax and find their zen moment after a long hard day. It's a good thing to do when you are first learning as you have more time to really pay attention to what you are doing.

Read all you can, ask any questions you still haven't found answers to and enjoy the journey

    Default Starter kit

Ok, so LarryAndro is hooking me up with a starter kit - 5/8 Razor (shave ready), strop and a poor man's barber hone for touch ups. Thanks Larry.

I have my lathering down pat after three years shaving with a DE. Now it seems I just need to do some more studying before I attempt my first few tentative strokes. I've read Lynn's post on his first shave suggestions and I'm totally with him - go into this slowly. I did the same thing when I picked up the DE. It probably took longer but it definitely kept me out of the ER.

My wife is going to FREAK when she sees me with a straight razor. She was convinced I was going to seriously injure myself when I took up the DE. "My grandfather used one of those. He was always cutting himself." Will they never understand?

No, I don't think they'll understand. But that's OK because we certainly don't understand them
