Thanked: 0Hello from the Uk
I just joined SRP a couple of days ago.
I recently changed from cartridge razors (Wilkinson Sword Quattro Titanium) to a Parker DE shaving setup with Boar & Badger Brushes and ToBS Soaps and Creams. This was a great step up from the cartridge razors as you can imagine.
Having followed this forum and and Badger & Blade for a few weeks i've seen lots of images and talk of Straight Razors. This has piqued my curiosity and I now intend to move upto a a straight very soon.
To this end i've been reading as much as I can on what I need and the various techniques that I need to learn. I've decided for now to buy two cheaper Razors and a cheaper strop to learn with and then go upto a Dovo Bismarck at a later stage when i'm comfortable in it's use and care. I do have a Barryco straight razor on order from a seller here and will be getting a strop for it next payday.
regards
Mick

Welcome to SRP Mick. If you haven't already done so check out the SRP Wiki beginner's guide and SRP founder Lynn Abrams recommendations for the first straight razor shave here. Since you are in the UK a good source for shave ready razors is Steve Dempster at the Invisible Edge here. Read my sig line below for the old barber's advice on avoiding nicks and cuts. Works for me when I follow it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1371Welcome to SRP Mick!
Be sure to ask if you have any questions as you get started.
Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

Welcome Mick, you have found the best place on the web to learn everything you ever need to know about straight razor shaving. You have a good beginning with already using a brush and soaps.
Good luck with your journey and let us know if you have any questionsLast edited by CarrieM; 03-24-2010 at 10:38 PM. Reason: spelling issues

Thanked: 0Thanks for the welcome fella's. Glad to see that there are others out there with an interest in this, and from the UK too. For now i'm looking and learning as much as possible. I have most of the gear I need already and will be looking to buy a Straight Razor and Strop next month. It's my birthday coming up soon so i'm gonna treat myself. I intend to get a couple of vintage straights. One to use and one to keep as a backup and reference. If I may, can I ask if anybody has dealt with this company before? www.strop-shop.co.uk - hand made straight razor strops, razor pouches, shaving accessories, vintage razors, razor honing and restoration He has a small selection of vintage straights that seem quite reasonable and the services on offer will be very helpful. I spoke with my family about trying a straight and my wife was quite supportive. My old man on the other hand thinks that i'm totally crazy! For my part I look forward to the challenge. This is an itch that has been with me for some time and I guess i've just gotta scratch it. Im usually do ok when I get into something. Here's looking forwards to learning and mastering a dying art.

Thanked: 1903Welcome to SRP.
The razors look good and reasonably priced. This one is particularly nice: Timor Hamburg Ring Straight Razor, Solingen. You might also find Revisor's NOS section interesting (what with the exchange rate working in your favour): Raritäten der Woche.
Do keep us posted on your progress.
Regards,
Robin
