Thanked: 0Hello All!
hi everyone, my name is josh. i have just recently wandered into the relm of straight razoring and i stumbled into this site.
i found a Geneva Cutlery Co. razor at a barber shop in town. its very clean, no blemishes or knicks, and from what i understand, fairly old. my question is, how old? i did a vague search of geneva co. but couldn't find much. i did find a person that had an identical razor, the only difference was the number. there is a little pyramid on the blade with a number in it, mine (23), his (9), what does this mean?
i am interested in using it and learning how to not cut myself...i was wondering aswell about a strop. is there any decent ones produced anymore?
any suggestions would help.
thanks
josh

Welcome to SRP. Geneva Cutlery A.K.A. Genco IIRC was a good outfit and you've got a potentially great shaver there. You'll need to have it pro honed for best results and you can find someone to do that for you in the member services area of the classifieds here. More great info here in the SRP Wiki beginner's guide.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hello All
Hello, Josh:
I am sorry I could not get back to you sooner with the photo links. I have been running around with freelance assignments.
I see you managed to figure things out, anyway. Good. The razor looks just fine. As JimmyHAD suggests, please have it honed by a professional — and you're on your way.
Regards,
Obie

Thanked: 0Thanks jimmy, nice to be here. i bought it from a barber, so its shave ready, thats for sure. the nice thing, he told me once i get all my equipment (ie stone, strop, badger brush, and soap) he will give me the run down of all. I figure the best way to learn how to hone the blade myself, is to learn from the man who has done it before.. right. does anyone have any ideas for a good shaving soap? I like that classic barber shop smell and i would like to know if there is a certain soap i could get that from. i also hear, mixing it with a sandalwood oil also helps with the shave, but also gives a nice clean smell.
