Thanked: 0Hey
I've been tempted to try a straight razor for well over a year now, but never worked up the courage, but found one in a box as I was helping a lady clean out her house. It was her husband's and she passed it on to me.
Time to get started.

Welcome to SRP. If you post a photo of the razor members can let you know if it is in good shape and worth having it honed up. Referring to the condition of the blade. If you are going to have a good shaving experience a pro honed razor is advisable. There are members here who provide that service for a nominal fee. See the links below to get some good info.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Hi,
That is an excellant strok of luck getting a razor to get started with. What kind is it?
Als, if you are here, you probably have read enough to know that that straight razor needs to be shave ready and most likely the one you received needs at the minimum a touch up. Please consider finding a member here to get your razor honed.
Good luck and let us know how your journey is progressing.

Thanked: 0Yeah, after reading, I'm sure it'll need honing. It's nothing fancy, but I think it will do the job eventually.
Where do I go about finding someone to hone it?

Hey
Hello, Jeremy:
Welcome to Straight Razor Place. We are delighted to have you here.
Yes, by all means, have the razor honed professionally. Also, please do as much reading as you can.
Are you a wet shaver as well? I mean do you use a brush, soap or cream? If you can, please fill us in on your setup.
Regards,
Obie

Jeremy, check out the beginner's guide in the link below for the basics on what you'll need and how to use the tools. Also SRP founder Lynn Abram's article on the first straight razor shave. To avoid nicks and cuts read my sig and follow the old barber's advice. It's still working for me.
