Hello, everyone! I'm actually on a couple of quests, and this seems to be a logical place to embark upon my sojourn.

I've had it with electric & cartridge razors. I used an electric for 20 years since I started shaving at 13, and switched to cartridges about 2 years ago. Electrics tore up my face, and cartridges only slightly less so. I've migrated to DE razors for day-to-day shaving, and my hope is to eventually move on to a straight, using my grandfather-in-law's old Wostenholm & Sons IXL razor:


I also have an antique store find -- an old Wade & Butcher -- that I'm trying to learn about since it has some interesting features and I know basically nothing about old razors. Hopefully I'll figure out what I have with these two, and how to restore them.

I just hope I don't get addicted to straights like I have my DE razors, and my knives, and...

Any famly heirloom razor is a good razor Even better when they are shave ready From the looks of it your in luck as it looks fine so far.

Personally I'd send out the other razor for pro honeing so you have a razor that shaves and so you know where your skills need to work up to. I'd be nervous sending one of my heirlooms out into the world to be lost by the post service... (I have 2 razors visiting new places [lost in transit] at this time).

What style knives are you addicted to? I'm a kitchen knife addict... Ya I need help...

Its really great to have an heirloom razor to use, definately a great part of your families history.

If you havent already, check out the Wiki, FAQ and Beginners guide. The links are in my sig line.

Definately send that razor out to a pro to be honed, that way you will start with a known edge and then you can get other razors to start honing on.

I have to agree, send out one of those razors and have it honed by a pro. Then you will know what sharp really is and have a benchmark for your future work.

Sorry. I got lost in different forums and missed this.
Well, I am more of a folder addict. I have custom folder tastes on a cheap Chinese steel budget, so I split the difference in cost without sacrificing quality. I have a miniscule Benchmade collection.

I would love to have a nice set of Japanese kitchen knives, but since my better half does most of the cooking and is right handed (to my lefty), she'll get a set before I do.
