Default What up from Golden, CO

    Hey folks,
My name is Paul and I live in Golden, Colorado (about a mile from the Coors Brewery in case you were wondering). A buddy of mine was looking for moustache wax and I did a search that took me to the Colonel Conk site. I was instantly fascinated and began looking for more info on straight razor shaving.....and here I am!

I'm gonna have to wait before I can buy my own shave ready razor, but in the meantime.....I plan on learning.

But here is a question......as far as honing goes....do I wanna be there in person when it happens or should I just mail a razor off to a guy? I plan on buying a used shave ready razor for starters, but I'm just curious.

    Welcome to SRP!

You're in the right place to learn all there is to learn about the hobby. If you're looking for shave ready razors at a good price, check the classifieds here as there are loads of great razors in there.

Also have a look in the Vendors Corner forum as there are loads of great suppliers out there who can supply you with razors, strops, brushes, soap and more. Straight Razor Designs does a deal on a full set where you can pick your razor, strop, brush, soap and mug and the razor will come shave ready.

If you havent already, check the Wiki and other sites linked in my sig line as they will really help you on your way.

In terms of honing, you can just mail the razor off to the guy and he will do the business. Make sure you get a reputable service though, and avoid knife sharpening places as they tend to treat razors the same way as knives and usually with lousy results! Check the Member Services area in the classifieds for details on honing services.

Of course, if you're lucky enough to live near to someone who offers honing, you could always email them and ask to come along and get a few pointers...!

Good luck and keep us posted!

    Hello, Paul:

    Welcome to Straight Razor Place.

You live in a beautiful part of the country. My daughter used to live in Denver, so I have been to Golden many times. Anyway . . .

Please make sure you read everything you can in the Wiki. The tutorials and the information will give a wealth of knowledge.

When you're ready, buy a shave-ready razor from any of the vendors mentioned here at SRP, or buy a shave-ready razor through the Classifieds. Please stay off E-Bay for razors right now. Later, when you have learned your way around the world of straight razors, you may try E-Bay as well.

If you're razor is not shave-ready, I suggest sending it to any number of hone masters here at SRP, or at the vendors mentioned here.

There is ample time to learn to hone. For now, I suggest concentrating on your skill with the straight razor and making luxurious lather with brush and soap/cream.

Of course, you can study the tutorials on honing. When you're ready for honing, if you can find someone in the neighborhood to show you, that would be great. Otherwise, it's a question of practice.

If you have questions, please post them. We're delighted to have you here.

    Regards,
    Obie

Welcome, as said in the other posts get the hang of the shaving first as not to have so much info at once to consider.
HERE is a link to the members map to see how may be near you.
