Hey all!
Great community you have here. Full of usefull information. I've spent some good time here at SRP reading the wiki, FAQ, and going through a bunch of the forums. Doing the best I could to educate myself. Feeling like I had a grasp on things I took the plunge and ordered a couple of razors and a strop from SRD. My plan to reach shaving nirvana (and stop putting Mach 3 razors in a landfill) is as follows:
-I purchased the Dovo "Best Quality" 6/8 and Dovo Black Micarta Inox 5/8 from SRD. Having the razors show up honed and shave ready was lesson #1 I learned here at SRP.
-The 6/8 razor will be my daily learning razor. The Micarta will rarely be used a will act as my reference razor so I know when the 6/8 needs to be sharpened. The Micarta will get worked into the rotation once my skills are deserving.
-My first shave was this morning. I shaved my right cheek, and when that went well I gave the left cheek a whirl (Left handed! Woot Woot!). I was really tempted to give my neck a shot, but I followed Lynns advice, took it easy and finished up with the Mach 3. No the straight razor shave was not close and smooth, but I didn't cut myself and I had a ton of fun. Cant wait to do it again.
-I'm going to leave honing for later. Stropping was fun and will give me plenty to focus on for now.
-I'm already eyeballing the classifieds. I can see how this gets addicting. I'd like to add one more razor in the coming months since the Mach 3 will eventually get shelved.
So thats where I'm at. I'm looking forward to the journey of learning the straight razor skills. I Cant thank you guys enough for the fantastic resource you've put together here.

Welcome! My first shave was similar. Not great, but no nicks and I walked away eager for more. I got the same razor to start with....the Dovo 6/8 "Best." I figured I would probably roll the edge or do something stupid with it, so I am not worthy of something better yet. I think Stropping for me is actually harder than the shaving.
I have been scouring the classifieds, ebay and other sites shopping though. Tempting!!

Woot! for your first shave. It sounds like you've got a handle on things at the moment...until you get to the classifieds as you suggested. It usually starts by buying new, then you want to experiment with vintage razors from the classifieds. Before you know it, you're hunting down the great deals at the antique dealers...it's addicting.

RAD is a baaaadddd thing, and i am a bad parent for getting my kids involved, shame on me

Levi,
Welcome to SRP. Pleased as punch to have you onboard.
It sounds like you have a nice setup there with two brand new Dovos--great starter razors. Like you, I purchased a really nice new Dovo that I only intended to use sparingly and another to be the workhorse for my daily straght razor shaving. Then my RAD kicked in. I use a rotation of at least seven straight razors now, with more in the drawer and more onthe way. Straight razors, espcially those of the vintage variety, can become quite addictive.
It also sounds like your first shave went quite well. Be patient, go slow and concentrate on perfecting your beard prep, stropping and shaving technique as well as understanding the contours of your face and peculiarities of your beard's growth and everything will be just fine.
Again, welcome to SRP. Take care--and continued smooth shaving."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain
