    Default greetings from utah

    hi,
i am afraid that i have contracted the straight razor bug! my name is mike and i live in logan ut about 35 miles south of the idaho border. i have been looking in on some of the razor forums and really appreciate all the great advice i have found. i now have a number of razors - some ebay some antique shop. i have had a modicum of success at honing with a 1000/6000 king water stone crox strop linen and leather strops. i get the feeling i am going to have to pick up a finishing stone of some kind to fit in there. i am leaning towards a coticule as it seems to do both honing and finishing. please correct me if i'm wrong. again thanks to all for the great info and i look forward to joining in on some of the conversations.
    mike

Welcome to SRP Mike. Honing straights is a horse of a different color as you probably know. The coticule is a fine stone and very versatile but there are a number of options you might look at. Follow the link below to the SRP Wiki and you'll find some good info on the various hones and everything else involved with the sport of straight razor shaving.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Give that King stone a whirl. You should be able to get a reasonable shave off the 6k and crox. Heck, when I started, I honed using 2k sandpaper and crox and got reasonable shaves off it. Of course, my tastes have changed since that time, but it IS doable.

    Hello.
Nothing like getting in at the deep end!
Be aware that you may develop an inaccurate perception of shave ready if you only hone your own from the start. I did & my ability has progressed somewhat since i first though i had a useful blade.
    Have fun with it.
