Thanked: 0Hello !!!! From Canada
Hi there,
I am totally new to straight razor shaving. I have for the past 6 months read and studied lots of various information. I have zero experience and zero equipment.
I would like as the moderator suggested for a seasoned veteran to assist me in the start of this journey. I am the dull blade waiting to be honed. LOL
Anyways thank you for reading this and I look forward to getting some guidance.
Thank you. JohnLast edited by JMACH1; 06-02-2010 at 09:16 PM.

Thank you for taking your time to respond to my post for help as it is appreciated. I was looking at the Straight Razor Place, but at the Razor + Strop combos. Your idea of the kit makes more sense. One question ... in regards to the razor. I was thinking 6/8 and you mentioned 5/8. Does it make much of a difference ? Interestingly enough we both selected the Dovo razor. Thanks again.

The 5/8 is more likely to be easier to learn on...you'd be surprised how much more difficult it is to start with a razor 1/8" larger. The thing about the larger razors is how much longer they last. A 5/8 should last your entire lifetime if properly maintained. The 6/8 will be an heirloom piece that will last not only your lifetime, but those of your children and grandchildren.
Having said that, it really doesn't matter where you start. Whatever razor you learn on is likely to be your favorite size. If you start with a 6/8, you won't run into many complications. However, I would leave the 7/8+ to the more experienced folks until you get the hang of it.
Not to worry, you'll likely learn on that Dovo and before you know it you'll have half a dozen razors and you can make a more refined decision later on.
