Thanked: 0Hi everyone!
Hello everyone! My name is Jason and I am from a small town in California. I first got interested in straight razor shaving Last summer. I was fed up with my current five bladed monstrosity. It never shaved me very well and the cost of replacing the blades was getting too expensive. So I started to scour the internet for everything I could find on the subject. I was amazed that there was so much information out there. I also had a hard time because there is so much conflicting information. Then I found this place. The Straight Razor Place. There is so much great information here! I also like that everyone here is so passionate about Straight shaving.
I had a hard time deciding were I should start. What I decided to do is get a Dovo Shavette to start out. My reasoning behind it was The shavette was a straight with training wheels. That way I could learn to shave with it and not have to shell out a lot of money for a razor and equipment. Especially if I decided that straight shaving wasn't for me.
I already have shave soap, badger brush, and a good mug that I was using. I have sensitive skin and razor burn with my 5 blade razor was already a problem. So all I needed was the shavette.
My first attempt with the shavette was a good experience. I got a good shave. I nicked myself 3 times but it was to be expected. I did 2 passes, the first was with the grain and the second was across the grain. All in all a good experience. The best part was I had very little razor burn. That alone was worth it. My second attempt was even better I didn't nick myself at all. I do need a lot more practice before I shave with a real straight.
Oh ya, today I was walking through a few antque stores and found a J. S. Holler & co. Adolf Blaich of San Fransisco Straight Razor. It was in the original box. It also says Solingen Germany. I got it for 25 dollars. It is in very good condition with go chips or cracks in the handle and almost no rust or tarnish. The blade is still very sharp. I wouldn't shave with it but, I tried it on some paper then arm hair and it went through like a hot knife butter. Is this a good razor?

Welcome! I'm not experienced beyond looking around the forums here at other people's finds, but that sounds like it's a pretty good find. Pictures perhaps?

Jawest,
Welcome to SRP. Pleased to have you aboaerd.
BTW...That's a nice looking razor you found. I hop that it will deliver many close, comfortable shaves. Try a test shave. If it doesn't do the job, check the SRP Classifieds, find a honemeister, and get it expertly honed. Then it should shave like a dream."Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don't mind, it doesn't matter." Mark Twain
