Thanked: 1160New guy.......
Hey there,So I'm new...yep. Nice to meet all ya'll.This is an awesome site.Overwhelming, addicting and all around cool ! I got a Col. Conk 5/8 blade. Two strops a russian and a rineleder.Got a good brush and mug.Deparately want to be 100 % switched over but still can't seem to get bbs on the neck, upper lip and mouth areas.I suspect I need to get my razor done shave ready and see if that does the trick. Don't know but I've heard that a 6/8 busts a tough beard better, but i'm not sure on that.Detailed info on that subject alone would be helpful. Why are the sizes different anyway, what differences do they make ?? Glad to meet all of you and hope I don't mess up on the forums as I'm not very savvy on foruming ? That's going to be a word now...Yep . Good shave to you It's 4am mtn. time here and I just got done shaving. Hence the name Nightblade. Insomnia is bliss ??

Purely personal prefference... Personally I like a larger heavy blade, only cause it feels better in my hand as well as on the face. Anything under a 5/8 gives me the willies and feels weird.

Welcome Nightblade!
We're glad to have you with us! If you havent already, have a look in the SRP Wiki articles linked in my sig line as they will give you some good tips on shaving, lathering and all the other elements of straight razor shaving.
The neck, tache area and chin are the hardest areas to get right.
The cheeks are usually pretty easy, but a lot of people have weird hair growth direction on their next which can make things harder. The most important thing to do is feel which way the hairs are growing and stretch the skin the other way to make the hairs stand up. This will help you get a BBS shave on the neck. That skin stretching is applicable to the whole shave as well, and can really improve the results.
In terms of the the chin, its really just practice. The hairs there tend to be tougher than in other areas, and the angles are always changing as well which makes things even harder. Just take things slow, keep at it and you'll get there.
Have a look in the videos forum here on the site for examples of how to tackle different areas of the face.
I'd definately recommend getting your razor honed if it didnt come shave ready. You'll really notice the difference! The classifieds have honing services for sale under member services, so check that out as well.
Different widths of blade are really personal preference rather than one being better than another, and some people like wider or thinner blades. Some people find more wedge like razors work better on tough beards, but TBH as long as the razor is well honed, you should get a good result whatever width or grind it is.
I tend to prefer bigger blades, and I like my wedges as well, but I shaved this morning with a 4/8 hollow ground razor and got a great result. And I have a pretty tough beard, so its really down to the honing and shaving technique.
Other than that, pull up a chair and make yourself at home!
Good luck and keep us posted!

I'm already feelin better guys ,thanks . Wish I could shave more now. I told a friend today wilst talking straight talk, that "shaving with a straight razor is sexy....But it's even sexier if done by a sultry girl expertly and flawlessly ". And on that note ,Im gonna get educated and look around. Thanks again

Welcome to SRP.
I'm sure your stubble will know nothing about the size of the razor you use, only how sharp it is. I have a Dubl Duck 5/8 Satin Wedge that will bust any tough beard as well as any 6/8 razor canThe white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
