Thanked: 0Returning to Straight Razors and found a new hobby
Hello Everyone,
My name is John and I am a civilian contractor supporting the Army all of the world. Right now I am overseas and decided I would give straight razor shaving another shot after my previous attempts.
My first try was over 10 years ago with no help from anyone, a straight razor I found and a set of knife sharpening stones (notice no strop mentioned). After three attempts to try and get a hair shaved on my face and no cuts I tried to sharpen it (I would imagine that it was a 400 and 800 grit stone) and made it worse. I picked up my disposable and the straight razor was lost in my many moves.
I picked up shaving with a DE a few years back and grew quite proficient with the method and liked the results since I am prone to ingrown hairs. I always wanted to try a straight razor again, but knew I would need the time to spend learning theory, technique and practice and more practice.
Now I find myself with more time than I know what to do with and enough spare cash to indulge. I have been shaving daily with a straight razor for over a month now, learning the drastic difference between factory 'shave-ready' and SRD 'shave-ready' shaves.
Next step is picking up more and more gear to practice honing. I've lurked in the shadows here for a while picking up tips and now want to become more of an active member. I've got a fist full of razors on the way to practice with courtesy of Larry, and look forward to learning all I can from everyone and hopefully one day return the favor.

Welcome to SRP!
Yeah, 400-800 grit will get you a damaged face for sure! I'm sure, through your reading, that the guys here don't even consider a razor honed unless it's seen at least an 8000+ grit stone. Glad you're enjoying that razor from SRD. I've got their Special and Bismarck and love both of them...

Good luck on your straight shaving.

Returning to Straight Razors
Hello, John:
Welcome to Straight Razor Place, and welcome back to the world of gentlemen shavers.
You would not think so at the beginning, but before you know it, you discover the straight already has become a hobby, as well.
It's the best of two worlds, really: to start your day with the pleasures of a good shave delivered lovingly by your hobby.
We are delighted to have you with us.
Regards,
Obie

Thanked: 31Welcome to SRP! If you have any questions just ask. A lot of good information and great people here. I just picked up a nice Belgian blue hone from Larry, fantastic person to deal with.
