    Default Big Salty Newbie

Hey fellas, I'm new to STR8s, and just found this site. I live in Salt Lake City. My great grandfather was a barber, and always used a STR8. I remember admiring it as a kid, and finally decided that it was the time to try it. I was given my first wet shaving setup for Father's Day: a Dovo Special 6/8 tortoise, SRD 2" latigo strop, and Conk's badger brush and bay rum soap. After finding this site and reading the reviews, it sounds like I fared pretty well. I'm three shaves in, and getting smoother every time. I look forward to getting to know all of you (as of now I'm the only soul I know that uses a STR8), and am excited to to learn more about this process.

    Hello, chay2k:

Yes, indeed, what you're starting with is quality stuff. This is good. Now is your opportunity to do research in the Wiki and watch as many shaving videos as you can.

Mastering the straight razor takes time. So do take your time and enjoy the ritual. Any questions? Please ask away.

    Regards,
    Obie

I just found this thread. So it looks like there are three of us! I moved to Salt Lake in June of 2010. About a month or so ago I picked up a pair of nice Kropps from an antique shop. I've already got my strop and badger brush and other stuff. I just need to get these razors shave ready. Do any of you Salt Lakers know of a good place to get a razor honed?

First, welcome to SLC. Second, I was looking at those two Kropps with the case and barber's hone, so shame on you for beating me to them! Congrats, they looked nice. There's a cutlery shop on Broadway, called Lorenz, that claims to sharpen straights. From what I hear, while they are very good with knives, they are not to be trusted with a razor. I went in and talked to the owner, and he'd never even shaved with a straight before. My razor came shave ready from SRD, but when it does need a honing, I'm planning on sending it up to gssixgun, in Idaho. Hopefully soon I'll have the money to get some stones together, then we'll be able to do some honing here in the Beehive State.

Well, you're off to a good start. And while I'm by no means an expert, feel free to pm me with any questions or if you ever want to meet up. It would be cool to get a little straight razor community going here. Salt Lake is a great city, I've been here five years myself, and I'm glad to hear that there's someone else out there that's a wet shaver.

haha cool I snagged those Kropps as soon as I saw them. It was a total coincidence. I went in with my wife looking for some furniture and on a whim I asked if they have any straight razors. Then she whips out those two nice Kropps. I was really lucky.

I've also heard about Lorenz and thought it would be my best bet to look elsewhere for a honer. You mentioned a guy up in Idaho. Would he by chance be in Idaho Falls? I'm heading up there tomorrow and Tuesday for work. Maybe I could stop by and give him some quick business.

Good to hear I've got someone to talk to about straight shaving in SLC. Thanks for the response.

No, I believe Glen is up in northern Idaho somwhere. Check under member services in the classifieds, you should be able to find his info there.
