Thanked: 0New Member From So Cal
I'm new to straight razor shaving and am very excited to learn all I can about it. I have a Dovo best 6/8, a Japanese Tosuke, and I just ordered a Robert Williams " Purist". I have a Norton 4/8k, Chinese 12k, TI double sided paddle strop, a double sided hanging strop, 1 micron and .5 micron diamond paste, as well as classic shaving green strop paste. I honed the Dovo myself, as it wasn't shave ready, and managed to give myself an okay shave, but with lots of irritation. I am used to DE razors, so I have quite a learning curve in both the honing dept and the shaving dept. Overall, I am very pleased and anxious to learn.

Well you've got a very nice kit there to begin with. Read the honing tutorials in the SRP Wiki in the toolbar above and take a look at some of the honing videos such as this one with Lynn and Glen here. Get some practice razors and have at it. Practice makes perfect.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Best to send the Dovo to someone here for honing. And pick up a spare for practice honing.
It is too hard to figure out if any problems you may have are the honing, or the shaving technique.
Welcome to the group!
