Thanked: 0Kiwi Newbie
Greetings all,
My name is James and I live in Auckland, New Zealand. I have just ordered my first straight from Jarrod at The Superior Shave and I am anxiously awaiting delivery.
I purchased a cheap(ish) strop locally and have a nice collection of soaps/creams and brushes from my DE shaving.
Can't wait to start the long learning process that is Straight Shaving... it has been a goal of mine for many years and whilst procrastinating to avoid writing more of my dissertation I decided to take the plunge!
Any advice will be most welcome.
Cheers
James

Welcome to SRP
Hi James,
First and foremost...welcome to SRP
Second, glad you took the plunge after sooooooo many years. it's about time.
What razor and strop did you end up getting...pictures will be great (show and tell)
What about your cremes/soaps (which ones)?
Looks like you are set to go
As far as advice...don't be discouraged. There may be less than perfect days and it may take awhile...don't expect a perfect BBS shave from day 1. Give it time and concentrate and be cognizant of technique (angle and pressure)..Mainly: remember to have fun!!
PS: what is your dissertation in or about? When will you get done?

Thanked: 0Well... My dissertation is about the Federal Surveillance of Marcus Garvey and the UNIA between 1917-1924... whew...it is due on October 29th and at the moment I am trying to read what I write over my supervisors red pen comments!
I will post a picture of my razor when it arrives and the strop I ended up getting is an old ROma 51 Horse Hide strop from the local equivalent of ebay
Soaps I have is Tabac, Mama Bear Dublic Tweed and Spellbound Woods
Creams I have are TOBS Avacado and T&H West Indian Limes,
Waiting on a missing shipment of TOBS Rose and TOBS Lavender from the UK
I have an Edwin Jagger Super Badger Medium brush which I like plus an old Omega that all the hairs are falling out of!
I tend to finish with an Alum block and then some Thayers.
I'm prepared to put in the hard work when I get my straight... probably can't dedicate full-time until after University finishes.
I also would like to get into honing later on... when my budget allows and if I enjoy the first month or so of straight shaving.
I think that's about it
James

Welcome to SRP James.
You didn't say what razor you bought.
Advice : Keep the razor flat on the strop but use a featherlight touch... & read lots of SRP Wiki especially the Beginners Guide : Straight Razor Place Wiki:Books/Beginners Guide - Straight Razor Place WikiThe white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.
