Hello!!! from Amarillo, TX.
Hello everyone, I found this site through youtube while researching proper use and maintenance of straight razors. I've decided to take up this traditional style of shaving, and I'm jumping in beard first. I would like to find the right gear to get me going, but I'm not sure about the best equipment to do so. (especially on a tight budget) I've got a razor coming in the mail, nothing fancy but hopefully it'll do the job, plus a family erlume, as soon as my grandmother remembers where she put it. What I need is a good strop and honing stone that won't rip my pay-check in half. l found a stone on ebay that was 3000 & 8000 grit, for $80.00. Will this be enuf to maintain my blade, will I be paying to much. I would really appreciate if someone could help me find the right supplies.

Hello and welcome. Lots of good info here and very friendly and informative people. I am one month into my shaving and have progressed well with the info here and from the members.
I can not stress enough the reading of the Wiki. As well as posts on technique.
From reading the wiki and posts you will find it is important to put you emphasis on the razor. Make sure it honed and shave ready before you jump in. Check out the members services to get your blade up to snuff.
In my opinion with my limited knowledge hold off on the stones and get the stopping down first.
You can get a nice set up on the cheap with keeping with the basics. Again its all in the Wiki. Also important to read Lynn Abrams (SRP Founder) first shave post:

Welcome to SRP. One of the most important things you will need is a strop. Check the classifieds here on this website and around other various websites and the bay and you'll probably find something within your budget. There are even threads here regarding using newspaper or DIY strops out of old blue jeans. Be sure to check them out and read the WIKI. Welcome aboard and best of luck.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
