Please enlighten us a little bit: what other hardware do you have besides the razor? What brand is the razor? Do you have any experience using a souble edge razor (I typically recommend that new users use a double edge first since they are easier to learn to use then a straight is, yet the skills that you learn with a double edge are idential to the skills that you use with a straight)?

have been using double edge for some time & decided to progress to sr8.
have a dovo bismark, strop & paste, brush complete with a badger on it.have always shaved using oil first and then shaving soap and now trying some soaps from truefit & hill(traditional olde world stuff).Any advice welcome.
looking to add a couple of more razors shortly once i get the basics and decent level of proficiency with the dovo.

If you have progressed from a double edge like me morty then you are in a position to answer my assertion that they are great practice for the straight. What is your opinion?

what exactly about a DE, other than not pressing the razor into your face as hard as possible, translates to using a straight razor?

every DE i have used has varied a bit. You basically just use the head as a guide, it is a no brainer.

    jb,
used DE as i found that stock of the shelf razors weren't lasting that long & wanted to try something else, i did get a far better shave with it ,didn't really feel at the time that i had the skills for using a sr8 and decided after a while why not.I did find that after years of picking up a pre-packed of the shelf razor it did take a fair few goes to use the DE properly without having the usual nicks and scapes from a novice user.

I have found the opposite to be true for me. Learning to use a straight razor has taught(helped) me how to properly use a DE. I prefer the straight, of course, and I use it 99.9% of the time. - of course I am talking about learning to do multiple passes, very, very lightly with the DE. Most of us only did one pass with the DE and, of course always pressed too hard.
