Thread: Peach Fuzz: A Newbie Introduction

Okay, I don't know if this is appropriate in this forum or not, but Im posting it on this thread so anyone who doesn't know who I am will know of my limited knowledge on the subject of razors.



So I spotted an antique razor today:

I went to an antique store today looking for some straights and I came across a J. A. (couldn’t read the last name) with what looked like the original handle and a box. WHat makes me think that its the original handle is that it had what appeared to be brass fittings on the bottom. THe blade did have Solingen engraved on the tang. It looked like it may very well have been a decent razor (to my newbie eyes, and based on my limited understanding of the wiki. Im thinking about snagging it up for the future) that perhaps would be worth it in case I decide to start collecting. Im still after a shave ready razor and all of the equipment, but I went all over town today looking for the necessities.

I squeezed the scales a bit and they were flexible enough to squeeze together under light pressure (if that gives ou any idea of the material). The blade would rotate almost 360 degrees in the handle (don’t know if this is common or not.) I wish I had brought my camera.

I ran my fingers on either side of the spine, there didn’t appear to be any narrowing that would indicate over honing, and there weren’t any real scratches on the blade.
It had some rust and upon magnification of the blade, it looked like just a few tiny nicks.

They were asking 32 dollars. THis is an old antique store so Im wondering if I can haggle. THey also had 2 more they were asking 19 a piece, but they didn’t look special.

WHat do you think, is it worth it as a restorer piece or do you think I might can talk them down to 25?

the box said Fox Brothers, Pine Bluff, Arkansas.


Edit: I found out that Fox Brothers was a hardware store back in the good ole days.

the J.A. razor would probably be a J.A. henckles. I have one that I shave with and it does a wonderful job. the other two that were less expensive and didn't look special might just be great razors. you wont know untill you get the name and search for them on either the reviews or in the forums. I would say snatch them up as long as the edges don't look eaten up. as far as collecting vs shaveing all my razors are antiques and I shave with my entire collection.

One of them was a blue steel an it had a big chunk missing from the blade (she still wanted 19.00 for it!)

I don't know what the other was.
