I got tired of my disposable razors so I decided to research this a bit. I've had one straight razor shave at a barber shop once and loved it. I read through the faq/wikis, I think I'm about ready to take the plunge and buy the necessary supplies to get started.

I've got a SR, strop, and brush kit ordered. Hopefully I will get them next week.

Tell us more! Details, we want details. Vintage razor? New? Best badger? What size knot? What is the strop? Tells us all about it. I love to hear first shave set stories!

I got what I believe is a vintage razor from the SRP classifieds. It is a Geo Wostenholme & Sons IXL Sheffield 5/8 round (shave ready). It appears to be hollow, but I'm not sure if it is full, half, quarter. I have to be honest, I pretty well took a guess on the best blade to purchase.

I bought the filly strop (recommended in another thread) and a basic boar brush kit from RupRazor.

I'll let you know how the first shave goes when I get everything. I honestly can't wait.

Mmmm... sheffield razors are known to be very good razors, I've just realised, I am swimming through alot of solingen razors and don't have one sheffield, I will need to rectify this.

And I'm sure Wostenholme is a good name too, and of course if you bought it from the classifieds you won't have no bother with that razor!

    regards

Read up on the wiki and watch those shaving videos. Another good idea is to practice stropping with a newspaper and butterknife.

Be sure to tell us how your first shave goes!

I've watched a TON of videos and done a bunch of reading, some of the articles twice.

I like the "stropping practice" idea though, I'll give that a shot.

Now all you have left to do is to take a recent photograph so that the surgeons will have something to work with! *
