Thanked: 0Newbie needs all the help I can get
Hello All,
My name is Dean.
I found out about this place through a thread on a cigar forum.
One of your esteemed members is also on there and had responded to a shaving thread.
I am currently using (rather poorly) a Gillette fusion.
I am tired of the price and quality of shave.
I want to step up my game and try the world of straight razors.
I am enamored of the beauty of some of these blades and intimidated by the variety.
Any suggestion of where to start is appreciated.
Thanks,
Dean

Hi Dean,
I'm a newbie to using str8's myself and the information & help on this forum is endless.you should check out the wiki section of this forum titled "getting started".
as far as equipment goes the worlds your oyster but again theres help in the wiki section.I wouldn't spend loads on your first str8 as no doubt you will give it a hard time,I have but you'll be amazed at how quick you pick things up and everyone on here is really helpful.

+1 to what Morty said. Also, depending on where you live, check to see if there is a brick and mortar store near you. It would do a lot of good to go to a wetshaving establishment where they could explain all the equipment choices and show you how to get started from soup to nuts.

First kit is often determined by budget <100$ is possible if you wish (theres no limit in the other direction) but a full kit from one of the vendors here start at 160 all exsept the aftershave
I like the 5/8 size myself
if you find a brick and mortar store (or any other store for that matter)remember to ask if the person that hones there razors is using a straight himself.
If they cant answer you the razor is not shave ready and needs to be sent out for honing
If in doubt come here ask a question and save yourself from expensive mistakes
A lot of the equipment on the market is garbage and the seller dont even know it
As in i wouldnt buy a straight from one that thinks braun makes razors

Welcome!
+1 on reading the Wiki and ask questions. Check out all the vendors and the Classifieds for you razor and or set.
Once you get started you will not be able to stop.
Warning Razors are like potato chips---you just cant have one.

My first bit of advice would be to lurk a bit... read some posts, and watch the classifieds for a week or two. You'll be able to see what a deal looks like a little easier... after you get set up with a kit, you are in the right place to learn the rest... good to have you here!
