Thanked: 0Thanks
This site is the best thing since sliced bread. I've found so much helpful information here. I tried my first shave last night and I have to say that it looks like I had a knock down drag out fight with Freddy Kruger but I still went to bed feeling uber manly. I can't wait to get the hang of this. It's something my boys will really enjoy having their old man teach them when they get old enough to shave.

Thanked: 3795Welcome to SRP and uber-manliness!
Regarding the Kruger effect, what was your prep and what's the story on your razor?

Read as much as you can and practice daily...toss everything else in the drawer and go 'cold-turkey' and you'll have it down before you know it.

Thanked: 0Honestly, at the moment I'm using a straight razor I got off of ebay. What a mistake but then again, I didn't find this forum before I purchased it. I would like to purchase a good starter razor and I would like to get something on the cheaper side since I know I'm going to mess up the blade while trying to learn the correct way to keep it sharp and honed.
I've seen the classifieds on here but really, I'm driving blind right now and any advice would be gladly accepted.

You won't mess up:)
Congratulations on your first shave! It definitely will get better.
Obviously, no one knows your budget but you. However, don't be so afraid that you'll mess up the blade that you get a poor product that will steepen your learning curve. Learning to straight shave is easiest when the number of variables is decreased to @: you and prep/lathering.
I decided to skip on the honing until I'd learned to shave - one less variable.
Welcome to SRP!
