Im Ralph... i currently live in Vegas, but im originally from Cali... I am a fan of anything with a blade... it has earned me the nick name Stickl'Em with some of my friends, mainly because the Spyderfly butterfly knife i used as an EDC... i unfortunately no longer have that knife, but still have others that i carry... i am in the begining stages of knife collecting, and am very interested starting straight shaving. ive researched this site and others and i am ready to make my purchases! Every knife i own was bought for a specific reason and is meant to be used and to be used for a long time. i greatly enjoy caring for, maintaining, and using my blades. one of the reasons for wanting to straight shave... even the most expensive strait blades are meant to be used, that cant be said about all knives... another reason is i like perfecting my skills with a blade. i taught myself may tricks with a bali-song and consider my twirling skills far above average... but my fingers suffered many cuts in the process... like with a bali-song, strait shaving is a skill you learn by doing, every mistake made, is a step toward perfection. i have never had a straight shave, i am uncomfortable with someone i dont know putting a blade to my face and neck, but i have always wanted one. I am looking forward to my first shave!

Welcome to the SRP. Two of the things I enjoy most in life is having my face shaved by a barber with a Str8 and doing it myself.

    Hope you enjoy!!!

Welcome Ralph. You'll have to post pics of some of your knives in one of the forums here. Do you have a Str8 picked out?

Might I recommend you have your gift purchased from SRD. It will be Shave-ready, and I believe they still give one free re-hone. (Don't quote me on this)

    Hello, Ralph:

    Welcome to Straight Razor Place.

Anytime is a good time to take up straight razor shaving. Obviously your time has come. Good for you, and we're glad you've joined us.

That razor you intend to buy from Amazon is a good starter razor. Is it shave ready? If it comes with the factory edge only, most gentlemen here will tell you that it is not shave ready and must be sent out to a professional to hone.

Unless, of course, you have experience with honing straight razors and can do it yourself.

    Regards,
    Obie

my family swears by amazon... if its not on the wishlist, i wont get it, unfortunately...

SRD still advertises the free re-hone. If i dont get it for xmas, then i probably will purchase from them...

Hi and welcome. I'm a newbie too. SRD still offers the free hone; after reading much here about the importance of making sure that a shave ready razor is really shave ready, I just ordered a Dovo 5/8 from them. I read that the honing is done by the guy(s) who run this site and that was a deciding factor for me. In any case, gl and happy holidays.

    Welcome to SRP Gentleman !

I agree with souschefdude, if you buy a "restored" straight razor, it will be "shave ready" and you will start with a good shaver..
