Thanked: 0Cheers New Razor, New Shaver, New Believer
Hello Everyone,
Just thought I would share my story, I just had my first shave with a straight about 20 minutes ago. I purchased a Dovo Prima Klang from SRD and it came in the mail today. For the past few weeks I have been researching and finally pulled the trigger. Here's a little info, I have very sensitive skin, and a very thick beard. I have always had to shave with a fresh mach 3 blade and it was getting to be ridiculous expensive. So I made the jump to straights.
Like I said I just had my first shave a few minutes ago. It was very nice, took me a long time though. I have read all the wikis and seen 100 youtube videos, but it seems like nothing beats practice practice practice. It was close, and very comfortable, although I am still a little freaked about slicing into my face. I managed to not nick myself at all, which was reassuring. My only complaint is that my lack of practice and skill left me a little blotchy, as I only went against the grain on some parts of my face it seems. The chin was a bastard to shave haha. All else went well. I loved the shave and loved the blade. Can't wait to do it again tomorrow, and I look forward to many spirited discussions on this board.
cheers,
raphael

Welcome to SRP!
Sounds like you are off to a great start. Your technique will improve and your skin will acclimate to the straight razor which will result in great shaves. One recommendation that might help speed the process along would be to avoid the against the grain pass for a while. Also, the goatee area is the hardest to get right, so I wouldn't worry about less than perfect results at this point.
Congratulations on successful first shave.

Thanked: 443Congrats and welcome! I started slower, only using the straight on the easy bits (cheeks and sides of neck) and still using the disposable on my chin and adam's apple. I still don't go ATG under my chin; have to make do with across.
You'll learn the lay of your face as you go; it's been interesting for me to learn how many directions my stubble points. I'm still learning, and still figuring out the spots that really need stretching and the best spots to stretch from.
I cut a washcloth into 2" squares and use a moist one to "grip" a bit of face as I pull it along a jawbone or whatever. That gives me better traction than bare fingertips on wet/lathery skin.
Good luck!"These aren't the droids you're looking for." "These aren't the droids we're looking for." "He can go about his business." "You can go about your business."
