    Default Allow myself to introduce...myself

    Hello all.

My lovely girlfriend gave me a 5/8 Dovo Black Star for xmass and a strop for good measure. She also let me know that I am never to shave with a straight-razor in her presence.

I've been wanting a SR for years so hooray for me!

I live in Pasadena and would love to get some mentoring on honing and stropping my new baby. As we just wrapped up a move and the holidays I'm going to hold off on getting a stone for a few months, (money money money). However, if someone around the area would like to hone my blade while I watch I would be more than willing to bring a bottle of 12-year Redbreast Irish whiskey to be enjoyed during the instruction and left at said mentors house for later enjoyment, (the whiskey, not the Dovo).

If there are no takers I would love some recommendations on members/vendors to send it to for it's first hone.

I look forward to lurking the hell out of this forum.

    Cheers!
    Ryan

Congratulations on your new shave gear and your amazing girl!

Check the classifieds section on here and there are a list of members who offer honing services.

Do you know where your girlfriend bought the razor? If she got it from certain vendors, it could already be shave ready and might not need to be honed.

I'll make sure to ask her, however....thumbed the blade quite a few times right after I got it. Beginners mistake....

I don't know if I damaged the blade or not. Soon as I get some good soap I'll give it a good strop and shave test it if was indeed shave-ready.

Thanks for the offer but that's a little outside of my driving range at the moment, (work, work, work). I have some family in SD so next time I head out to see them I'll see about a meet-up with some whiskey in hand!

Just an update: The blade did not come shave-ready. I'll most likely be sending it off to a member to get it's first hone. Before I do that I'm going to practice on the strop. Thanks for all the warm welcomes!

For once California doesn't sound so bad.
