Thanked: 0Excited new SR user joining from NY
Hello all, quick intro. I'm a new straight razor user from Long Island, NY. My wife purchased a Dovo 5/8 full hollow grind Bismarck for me for Christmas. I have tried to read as much as possible in these forums to learn before buying. so far so good, quite a few nicks and irritations, but i guess it's to be expected. I'm thinking i should have bought a half hollow grind instead, as i have a coarse beard. But sharp is sharp, right?
I'm looking forward to the growing pains and the knowledge i'll gain along the way. my first shave was with canned shave gel. 2nd shave, i bought an Olive Oil based gel from Oliveology that came recommended. So so, i thought it dried too quickly. Now i'm waiting for a shipment of Eucris Hard Shaving Soap for testing. I've heard that the soaps are optimal for lubrication. Better than Olive Oil?? Not sure, but we'll see.
Will let you know how it goes. Happy New Year!

Welocme to the SRP. Best advice i can give would be, focus on stretching, pressure of the shave, and lather. a less than slick lather can cause some bigger nicks, and some blood. If it doesnt feel right, stop! Take the time, and everything will begin to fall into place. BTW you dont happen to be a Yankees fan do you...I'm from Boston originally. If you are a Yankees fan then try the opposite of everything i said above. just kidding best of luck and Welcome again!

Thanked: 0haha, not a big baseball fan. I'm more into Football. I will definitely heed your advice. There's so much good info, and bad info, out there. It's almost overwhelming, but i'll focus on the basics first.
Best regards!

Welcome to SRP! I grew up in the Islip/Bay Shore area.
Share isn't sharp when you compare straight razors. The steel used, the person honing and the hones used all have an effect on the quality of the edge and the sharpness of the razor. Be patient and concentrate on your shaves. Once it becomes second nature to you and you try other razors you will notice the differences in the sharpness. Right now you need to perfect your technique before you start comparing edges.
Good luck.“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)
