Thanked: 0Howdy from Oregon
Hey Fellas,
I'm thinking about getting into straight razor shaving, found your site, and here I am. I go to an old school barber here in Portland that always finishes up a haircut with a straight razor shave of the neck, and I'm interested in graduating from the safety razor/brush set the Mother-in-Law got me for Xmas to what you folks do.
I have to admit that I'm a little terrified of slitting my own neck on accident, but as they say 'it's not rocket science' and I'm still a few years away from the shakes.
Speaking of which, while I was in college in Corvallis Oregon in the mid-80's I used to go to a barber who, at that time, was in his 80s... Long story short, I used to get razor shaves from him. His hands would shake a little bit, but once he got within about 3 inches of my face they stopped shaking and I got a perfect shave every time.
I asked him where he learned to do this, and he said that during the War he was Vinegar Joe Stillwell's barber in China and had honed his skills on the transport ship over to the Far East. He said that if you could shave a guy on a rolling transport ship, you could do it anywhere. Sweet old guy!
Anyways, look forward to meeting y'all and thanks in advance for any help.
Pete

Welcome to SRP. There is a learning curve, but shaving with a straight is worth it! A quick search will answer most question you have and if not the members are happy to help. Enjoy.
